I haven't read all of the comments here yet (I'm working on it) but please count me in on this!!
I worked in one of the biggest LFS's in the country when the Nemo movie came out and it was a nightmare. We lost a LOT of business, dealt with a lot of angry customers, and turned many more away. Even after we set up a "Nemo display" and offered discounts on "Nemo setups" all they did was complain about the expense... so many of the "just give me the nemo fish and that 2 gallon fish bowl". This went on for at least a good year immediately following the release of the movie. The worst part of what I saw, first hand, and dealt with was the stream of customers, non stop, week after week, month after month, coming into our store begging us to save their sick nemo that they had purchased at one of the big box stores weeks or months before. To say it was a nightmare would be an understatement. I went home from work every night in tears for a long time. The senseless death, lack of reason, lack of humanity going on was overwhelming.

People can offer their own opinions, everyone has one... but if anyone thinks that the very sad and disgusting scenario the OP described can't or won't happen... you're wrong. I am actually expecting this one to be even worse than the first. The hype has been going on SINCE the first movie, now it's going to get a double dose. ANYTHING that might have a chance at preventing this, or even at least curbing it, is something I want to be a part of and give my full approval. I no longer work in a LFS and the Nemo movie was a big contributor to that. 20 yrs in this industry and the people after that movie just burned me out. I got a real heavy dose of just how sick our society is and I didn't want any part of it anymore. Kudos to those out there who survived it. I didn't have the stomach for it. There just are no words...

So please, count me in. Petitions, ads to spread around fb, whatever someone comes up with that I can do to help, I want in. And if it hasn't already been suggested, Ellen is a huge animal rights activist, someone needs to be sending HER the petitions! She has a lot of power, especially since she is the star of the movie. She is one of the few who actually does respond when the call is loud enough. She has a website... light it up and keep it lit until she responds. I love the idea of her doing a 30 second clip at the end of the movie. By that time the kids are in love with her and recognize her voice. They're listening. And it is very true... if the kids are taught, they won't let the parents do it. In all my yrs of educating the public, the fastest and easiest way to a parent was through their child. When the kids care and are inspired, fish live.

Just want to add that I think the internet is our friend this time around and we need to use it for all it is worth. Kids are addicted to social media, as are 1/2 of adults. Lots of good pictures of the specific fish/animals in question and an ACCURATE and easy to understand explanation of what those animals need, apart and/or together would be VERY useful to get going around fb. There are enough people out there who remember the Nemo nightmare who will want to help spread it around. Including information about over fishing for the aquarium hobby, the destruction of our reefs, and responsible fish keeping and aquaculture will only add to the benefits. Everyone has a chance right now to save a life!

Anything like this is always a good sign!

When I was younger before nemo was ever released in theatres I went into a pet store and I showed my dad the fish I wanted for Christmas it was a saltwater fish of course but I didn't know the difference.
Well Christmas came and I got a fish but it was a betta!
I asked my dad why I didn't get the fish I wanted and he said
"The fish you want needs a filter and a lot more care. But maybe if you can take care of this one we will think about it."
Well that betta was my pride and joy for a few years
And a few Christmas's later I got my first saltwater tank. There are plenty of ways to handle the "I want dory" situation! Let's just hope people have some common sense!

I can't sign that. To me, it is against taking fish from the ocean for aquariums, at least that's how I read it... It says too much about how they all die if we take them from the ocean, and too little about how they can be successfully kept in home aquaria

There is a few fish that should be left in the ocean since they have horrible survival rates and sure some get lucky but most don't like morish idols and some butterfly fishes

I signed the petition and shared it on Facebook. I added an explanation about how they should only be kept by advanced hobbyists in very large tanks. People who are aware of the needs of the fish and willing to put in the effort to care for them should be able to have them. The parents who just want to shut their kid up and throw them in a tank without properly understanding how to care for them should not.

The petition is just talking about clown fish and blue tangs. But it basically alluded to fish that are not captive bred should be left, at least that's imo

I agree there are some that should be left.

Uhh, yeah and the industry spends hundreds of thousands to fight the constant proposed legislation.

Robert Wintner, an executive director of the Snorkel Bob Foundation, a wildlife advocacy organization, and owner of Snorkel Bob, a fin and snorkel manufacturing company. This is a group that try over and over to ban our hobby.

So when you ask Ellen to support this cause. Her people reach out to those other nuts concerned about the hobby. And guess what? Those nuts start telling her that no fish should be confined to an aquarium. Bottom line is that if you want the industry to change, you don't bring in outsiders to help. They will never see it your way. There is always that side that thinks that a 300g tank is way too small for a free roaming spirit like Dory! And guess what, that side doesn't have a tank! Put pressure on the LFS to educate. Not some stupid announcement by an outsider that may push other who you don't want fighting this fight.
