I came downstairs this morning to a high-pitched beeping from the tank. My heater controller was reading 83 and beeping! My setting is 80 with a high threshold of 83. It has never gone off before, and the heater unit is about 5 years old. Fortunately, the controller did its job and shut off the heater. I noticed buildup on the heater probe (in left chamber of sump) and disconnected the probe and cleaned it up. I also wiped off the sensor, which is in the middle chamber with the return pump. I connected everything back and checked my settings again. The temperature is now down to the normal setting of 80. I did notice at 79, the heater light turns back on like normal and then shuts off again at 80.
My tanks have been operation for a total of 17 years now, so I've replaced equipment over time. The heater appears to be operating normally now, but I'm wondering if I should replace anything. Should I at least get another probe as a backup? I'm not sure how long the heating unit is supposed to last, so I'm also wondering if I should just order the entire unit including the controller.
