In 40g can be territorial so best is either 1 or a mated pair.

A good LFS might have pairs already.
Keep a close eye on the ones that stick close to one another and may rub their bodies together.

Males generally display more vibrant colours and flared dorsal fin.

Our first two fish in our IM75 were a pair of firefish that were together at the LFS . After about 3 or 4 months one started picking on the other. The picked on one was getting stressed out and hiding in the top rear corners of the tank all the time . We started a Fluval 32.5 for that fish .
