Just picked up a Canon 7D and the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. This new lens is a bit pricier than the old Canon 100mm macro, but I am very impressed by it. The focusing is super fast and accurate, and IS is very impressive -- combined with the ability to shoot pretty good quality up to 3200 ISO, I'm finding that handheld macros come out very well. Here is a sampling of the first pics I took, all handheld. I used a 10K custom WB on the camera, and did no adjusting of WB afterwards, just some contrast and sharpening with Canon's utility.

Awesome pics!

Super sweet setup you have!
I have a 50d and use a 50mm Canon macro.
Love the full frame sensor on the 7!

The 7D is actually an APS-C sensor, the improvements come from the noise reduction firmware on the camera, that allow higher ISOs. I would spend your money on the L-series macro before you get the 7D -- I think it is probably responsible for most of the success with macros. We tried it on my friends T1i body, and got similar results, although not quite as good. B&H has it on sale right now (of course, right after I buy it at full price): Canon | EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens | 3554B002 | B&H Photo

Very nice Mike! I am having some serious camera envy now :)

Here is an 80% of FTS shot taken with Eric's EF-S 85mm and the 7D:

Awesome pics!

Would love to try that new 100 IS macro. How about some crops from pic #1

Very nice I have been trying out my friends 100 mm 2.8 on my t1i . Might have to save couple more months and pick that L lens up

Here are a couple more I snapped with a tripod last night (still too lazy to turn the flow off...baby steps):

And not the best pic, but its probably the best I'll get since there is four feet of water between the glass and these corals and my trigger doesn't like clear water, but here is my milli rock (pink, yellow, and blue):

The IS is for image stabilizer? How well does it work on canon lenses? My wife and I are contemplating a 100-400mm IS lens from canon and I'd like to hear how the IS works from someone with one.

The IS is very impressive -- they claim 2-4 F-stops and I think it delivers that.

What ISO are you using? You could probably drop the ISO a little.
