Yes, that first calculator seems incorrect, and it doesn't 'show its work'. Here's another one:

Very nice. Thank you

It is about to get serious here. Bought a hole saw kit....time to make some Swiss cheese! Assuming that a 1 3/4” hole is standard hole for bulk heads. At least that is what aqueon told me. Found a local company that will custom make my overflow box for $90. Does that sound like a good deal?

Also since I have 14” to work with should I plan to drill three holes and have an emergency overflow? I am guessing it would need to be set just slightly higher than the main.

use three drains bean animal style. That is a rock solid drain setup and very very quiet. The holes should all be the same height, it is the pipes that are different.

Thanks. I figured they would be the same size hole...but what is that size? I have never drilled a tank before.

Umm what size is the tank again? 40-75g 3/4" bulkheads should be a great size. Is this an internal or external skimmer? If external (best way) you would do two 1.5" bulkheads from tank to overflow. Then the 3 3/4" bulkheads from overflow to drain to the sump. Google bean animal and you will find a lot of info.

I haven't plumbed one in a while so my 3/4" might not be the best size

By golly it worked. Only dripping on the inside of the drain....like a good little drain should.

Now to break out the Mr. Clean eraser and do some polishing

Mock up overflow box. Just about as small as I can make it. 4” deep and 12” wide. 23 3/4” tall.

Can see now how I’ll need to route out the opening above the overflow by a few inches.

Still quite a bit of free space

Very nice work!

Good news of the day is I was able to pick up a nearly new BRS 5 stage rodi system with gauge and TDS meter!!! Nearly 200$ off!!!

Question - do you all use the BRS filters or some other for replacements?

Ok so I have stalled out a bit. Trying to find someone that can make or show me how to make the overflow box. I do have a couple places getting back with me.

BUT I did get the overflow area routed out bigger so now I can reach into the box if needed.

Also got the RODI plumbed through the wall and into garage just Incase there is an “oops” or two. Rather flood the garage than the laundry!

Wishing I was a design major. Trying my hand at dry stacking. Lots of crevices, holes, tunnels....

Top view. You can see the overflow area and the dark black line that runs the perimeter is roughly to resemble 1/2” from tank side.

So what do you think?

Tallest part is around 16” and tank is 24”. Too short ? Too tall?

Also learned that if you get a Rubbermaid 50 gallon trash can it will hold 35 gallons before severely bulging!!!

Redneck engineering here we go.

How much will it actually hold?!?

Stay tuned for the answer!
