Hello all. New to this forum and SW. Have found a lot of great info here! I have kept freshwater tanks for 15yrs and finally jumping into salt water. I have an old 55-60 gallon hex that I am in the process of turning into a FOWLR. Tank is 24” tall. Is 25 inches from flat to flat side and 28” corner to corner. Each panel is 14.5” long. Geometry is not my friend but I think it works out to 56-57 gallons... hard to measure the side as the tank is one piece and rounded corners. Not a clear mid point to measure from.

Anyway- Here is a shot of the tank (full of junk and in need of cleaning) and the old stand.

I am planning to put a sump in so I had to build a bigger stand. I’m not that great at building things but here is how it looks under my first stress test. Will test it under tank load before moving inside. It has held around 450 lbs so far without any cracking or moving.....

It has three removable panels up front (magnets), two fixed panels and an open back.

Should fit a 10 gallon sump. I have put the first coat of black enamel paint on it today so more photos to come.

I have placed orders for the overflow kit (aqueon mega flow) and a Lifeguard Quiet One 4000 pro pump. Should be here in a few days.

I will be drilling the tank (bottom) probably here in the next few weeks and building the overflow box.

Planned substrate will be a white sand....I think

Currently have around 60 lbs of dry live rock.

Light is a black box LED and plan to get a 18” moon light too.

200 watt fluval heater.

Stocking list is up in the air. But my wife wants a Foxface and a Flame Hawk for sure. A yellow prawn goby has also been mentioned. I would like a copperband but have heard mixed things about them. All sorts of wants just not sure on a real good stocking list.....ideas welcome!

I’m not too keen on clowns but the idea of a pair with a nice anemone has been floated [emoji57] around.

And ideas and words of wisdom are appreciated!

Looking good! Welcome to R2R!

I am not sure that tank will be big enough for a Foxface. Also, since I see the kids, be aware they have venomous dorsal spines.

To get an expert opinion, when you are ready, post your tank size and shape with the projected stocking list at this thread:
https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/n...for-your-tank-post-here-and-well-help.200605/

Didn’t know about the spines. Kids should be good with them though. We have always had this tank and a 55 setup and they know to leave “my” stuff alone.

Thanks for the reply!!

I would advise you drill the back and use an external overflow box

Thank you for the comment.

I have already ordered the overflow and really want to keep plumbing mostly out of site. I know this will cut into my tank space but I think it would look better mostly because the tank will be in a spot that will have nearly a 360degree view. It will back to a pillar in my house so the rear view doesn’t really matter.

The drain and return will be about 2-3” off the back wall and a box built around that. I will use the rock help hide the plumbing. Originally I was going to put the lines in the middle of the tank and create a pillar style rock structure but decided to keep as much of the tank open and therefore moved it to the rear.

Sump JUST fits! So based on the calculator and assuming 14.5” side 24” tall it is 65 gallons. And a 10 gallon sump. I’m feeling pretty good about that!

Second coat going on inside if stand and first coat going on outside.

Here is a shot of the tank on stand next to my 11yr old for perspective. Stand is 31” tall with a 24” tall tank. Yes 31” - like I said. My wood working skills are....well not really skills!!

Stand update - just some more painting. But here is a shot of the panels and magnets I decided to use to hold them in place.

Here is my supply of rock. I think a few of these are pretty cool looking. Some with shells imbedded.

And my black box led. Both channels on full blast now my eyes burn! Guess I will have to figure out the dimming settings. No markings for percentages so I guess it is going to be.....a guess

Door are misaligned because they are still wet. Hoping the magnets will keep them in place better once dry.

Not sure if I will add another sealant or just leave the enamel black.....

Next phase= drill the tank! Now I’m scared!! Any suggested threads to read. Also what is the best hole saw for acrylic?

Welcome to R2R! I love hex tanks, although I haven't owned one in years.

According to that calculator it’s a 65 gallon tank with the measurements provided.

Looking forward to the process!
I'm getting 56.75 gallons with a different calculator. Length of one side 14.5", height 24". Water volume would be a bit less when accounting for wall thickness and air gap at the top. I'd probably use 55g for future calculations.

Thanks. I didn’t think the other calculator sound quite right. Not sure what formula they are using. I had calculated it myself and got the 56 but then that just seamed odd size. Didn’t think about the thickness making up the extra gallons over 55. Planning based on 55 then!!

Yes, that first calculator seems incorrect, and it doesn't 'show its work'. Here's another one:
