Not sure but I think it has to do with confinement and an instintive desire to dart up and away from a threat.

I have a fish trap. However I could never catch my target fish. My large sailfin tang was the first to go into the trap. He would eat all the bait. Then he would camp out inside the trap waiting for more food.

I purchased this fish trap from Precision Marine. Works great. You can lay it on the bottom of the tank or use magnets to attach it to the glass or acrylic. Unfortunately I don’t think they sell them anymore.

I made a 12"x7"x6.5" trap. I have a couple fish that practically live in the trap. I'm after my checkerboard wrasse because he harassed a pair of diamond gobies to death. Most fish are skittish about going in, although I did see the wrasse dart in real quick one time to grab a bite. I'm hoping in time the wrasse gets comfy enough to spend a second or two inside the trap.
