Fish Traps That Work

Would like to hear about peoples experiences with fish traps that were effective at capturing their fish. Especially larger fish like good sized tangs. Thanks,

I have had this fish trap for a bit over a year, and it is CLUTCH.

My fish are now well enough acclimated to it that when I drop it in the tank without the door and start feeding into it, They all know what's going on immediately and will easily feed in there making it very easy to get the fish you want.

Tangs Have been the easiest to me because I only mount a nori clip on the inside back of the trap.

I've used it as recently as a month ago and it took me about 4 minutes to get my Desjardini who needed a time out.

I have no personal experience with this, but have seen a lot of people lately posting that they used empty plastic shopping bags anchored in the tank to create walls or partitions to keep fish in an easy to access area. Just adding to the ideas list

Yes, I’ve been looking at sim ones from Bubble Magus/Seaside Aquatics. All of these require you to be present and release the door right? There are no good unattended traps?

See my recent thread here. I just caught a large rabbitfish measured just under 7" mouth to tail. Frankly more work than a tang due to being a notoriously cryptic (skittish) fish.

Yes, I’ve been looking at sim ones from Bubble Magus/Seaside Aquatics. All of these require you to be present and release the door right? There are no good unattended traps?

My experience is that everything has some sort of manual catch to entrap the fish, I figure its about not trapping who you dont want to trap.

I do not know of any automatic style traps plus you want to control which fish gets caught right? Sitting across the room with your hand on a string while you stalk your prey is part of the fun.

Or it was a royal pain in the a$*. I had to hide on my staircase behind the tank to entrap the heifer. That fish knew it was the end and avoided the trap like the plague.

Figured as much. I can think of more funner ways of spending my time. :)

Yup. I've caught a few evil wrasses, a powder brown tang and now the gold spot rabbit with the current trap I have. Never takes more then 24 hours after setting the trap.

That floating NYOS trap looks interesting.

I have a few cheap generic no brand name acrylic traps I got off amazon.... they all work OK, but are all a pain to either bait, set or or whatever.... I'm not in love with any of them. I think that NYOS trap looks like it may be decent, but of course, it's not cheap.

Yes was checking that one out as well. There’s also sim ones from trap matez which are sim in design but come in diff sizes. Again, not cheap, but if they work then it’s worth the $.

I use a blackout method.
Block all windows and turn off all light sources in the room. With only the tank lights on day mode and the fish swimming around, kick off the tank lights to "black out" the room. Then using a black net and flashlight you have about 30 seconds to a minute max to scoop up the fish while they are trying to adjust to the lighting change.

For me this works all the time because my fish wont go into the trap that I have unless they are desperate or feeling stupid.
