Flow question?

That is genius plumbing. I am thinking about stealing that idea on my 180 build. Has anyone else done something similar to this. I might not use a ocean's motions but I might do the closed loop with returns in the sand or through the bottom glass. I would love to see more pics of other examples. It would be hard to do with a return pump but easy with a closed loop.

This is one of my favorite concepts in reefing, and I can't wait to actually set up one of these myself. You can add a stand pipe or a toilet flapper to the top tank to make a surge device, too! It's also the perfect place to add a refugium since the pods can just slip down into the display without going through a pump.

Has anyone tried this? So the idea is that since the bucket is above the tank it wont drain right? I happen to have a spare 40mm bulkhead im willing to test!

Fin. Is that the only flow you have on the tank. I dont see any powerheads.

The drawing is a nice idea too but you have to have a bucket sitting up high. Kind of dangerous. And might not look too good. And would you light the bucket or fuge and how.

I have been doing my returns low in the aquarium for years. When i had my current 90gal made i had the overflow put in the middle of the back wall, and had two returnes drilled instead of the one a standard 90gal has. One on each side of the overflow box, about half way between the overflow and the ends of the aquarium. I have modular flex pipe cominig out of the bulkheads. I always use Y check valves in my systems. These are great for this application because they can be taken apart and cleaned. Even though I have never had one fail. i take them out every couple of months and clean them. I have been very happy with this set up.

I have the regular returns from the sump and a single MP40 on the back wall. You can't see it well, because it is behind the arch in the center. I got that mostly for providing flow in case the power goes out. It has a backup battery on it. No power heads in the tank. The Dart is over 3,000 gallons per hour and that is divided up into two ports at a time. So, that is a good bit of water moving around in a 140.
