Does it matter whether a flow sensor is placed before or after a gate valve? I don’t think that it would make a difference since the flow is regulated at both points, but this is my first time plumbing a system, so I want to make sure that either place would be okay.

I would go with the valve after the flowsensor..

In theory, if you put the valve upstream of the sensor, it may disturb the "input" reading of the sensor..

I have mine on the overflow since the return pump has 2 reactors so whatever is left goes in the tank and what goes in must come out plus the return line is 3/4 in and the overflow is 1 in
