Forum grammar...

I am OCD with grammar and spelling - I understand forum and "text" speak and use it myself frequently, but...

Anyone else struggle?

I know I'm a grammar/spelling ****. I can't help it.

Try being Dyslexic, you'll get over it. Not everyone is wired the same. I would never post if I let the grammar and spelling police get the best of me.

My posts are terrible. I use the app and ramble. I'm a math and science mind. My engrish and grammar is terrible! Sorry I apologize!

I try my best, but I'm also a strong believer in S.I. Hayakawa, a linguist and professor of English (and Senator), who taught as long as the words are understood, the correct use is secondary. It reminds me of the movies/shows of The Bowery Boys, and Slip Mahoney, the gang leader, who always wanted to show how smart he was by using large words......incorrectly, but understood. As an example, "You better bring an umbrella because it looks like we're going to get a little participation."

I love when people try to appear "verbose", but clearly did not pay attention in etymology class...

Some of the ones that get on my nerves:

Improper use of and the apparent interchangeability of "effect" (the result of something - noun) and "affect" (the ability to influence - a verb).

"Irregardless" is not a word. It is just "regardless" people... The use if the prefix "ir" means "not" and the suffix "less" means "without". Using them together is a double negative.

For all "intensive" purposes. This one is like fingernails down a chalkboard for me. It is "for all intents and purposes". The former does not even make sense. Oh, and since I brought it up...

There is a big difference between the words "since" and "sense".

I am guilty of mistakes due to typing too fast too, but using words out of context really gets to me.

How true. I started using forums back in the late 80's you had to buy a spelling program separate. It was not part of your computer OS. These spelling and grammar complaints have been brought up for years now.
I make mistakes sadly I am human and what some lacks in one part of their make up the are blessed in other ways.
If the English language is easy for you it may not be for others that doesn't make one person bad or another person good. Only different we all have our own crosses to bear.

This seems a bit rude tbh , some people have problems spelling or just don't care cause its a forum and most typing on cell phones. There shouldn't be a time ever you should make others feel lesser or there doing something wrong when some don't have control over it, just not very kind seems more like a issue better kept to yourself

Imagine a thread where the person has tangs in a 30gal AND bad grammar! Police everywhere! ;)

I'm probably guilty of all of this as well, spelling and grammar were never my strong suits in school. I am with the others that say it's really no big deal though. We don't know if someone typing even speaks English as a first language. Their location may be in the US but that doesn't mean they are from the US. Some people just struggle with it or have typos on cell phones. There is a line though between some bad grammar and spelling and "text" speech.
