Has anyone left their vertical uv sterilizer free standing? or does it need to be bolted to something?
 
Depends on the size. Some will have way more water in them than others.
 
I would think you would want to mount it for safety reasons but everyone has their own level of "good enough". If you don't mount it I would think you would have to plumb it with flexible tubing otherwise the stress on hard plumbing might cause leaks/breakage.

I would suggest french cleats with the included metal brackets so you can lift it off the wall for maintenance instead of having to unscrew it, etc. But again...everyone has their own idea of "good enough".
