Is there any freshwater topics/forums/build tanks here. I've sold my monster tank and am returning to my roots of freshwater--and a lot smaller!! The big tank just got too much for my health and time constraints. I think I'm going to retire, so that takes care of that problem!

Unfortunately, not that I'm aware of. I've asked, and the powers to be don't want to add a freshwater subform. I think it may be alright to discuss freshwater tanks in "The Lounge", which is our forum for off-topic discussions.

I've tried some of the other freshwater forums out there, and none are as active as R2R. You can wait days or more to get a single reply to a post on some of these forums.

I have been on TropicalFishForum.net lately, I like it, and the site is nearly identical to R2R in how it looks and functions, but it's not nearly as active as R2R.

Check my tank thread if you’re curious!

— I actually reached out to R2R about this topic! Here’s the response I got:

“Hey Jack! Welcome to Reef2Reef!

Although freshwater hobbyists aren't as commonly found in our community, we still have members who's primary focus is freshwater! We would love for you to share your tank with our community!

I look forward to seeing your tank and seeing you around our community!”

This is interesting… I don’t see why it would hurt to have a place for freshwater hobbyists to learn as well! Though that’s definitely out of my wheelhouse…

If you have the room for them, golden wonder killifish as well as some of the rainbowfish species are absolutely worth it.

That's what I thought, and I still kind of wish we do, just because Reef2Reef is far more active than any other aquarium forum I've seen. On other forums you have to wait days to weeks to get a reply.

That said, I recently tried Tropical Fish Forum to get some freshwater info. It's primarily freshwater, but they do have a saltwater section, and I see a whole lot of treating saltwater tanks like freshwater systems. Maybe that's something they are trying to avoid here.

That would be my guess too… It would likely brings a lot of the same repetitive questions into the equation…

I do know that I decided to start diving into saltwater aquariums purely due to my success in the freshwater side of the hobby, and I’m sure I’m not the only one!

I think that's a fairly typical progression in the hobby, especially if you start as a child. Occasionally, we have members that just jump right into reef tanks with no prior experience.

Agreed!

It seems that those who jump straight into saltwater with no prior experience are often met with a learning curve so steep that it tends to be overwhelming, unless their specific education/career training lends itself to understanding the various skills required to maintain a long-term successful reef!

It seems like there is a LOT of conflicting info for those whom are just starting to get into marine aquariums these days, regardless of their background!

That is very true, there's a ton of bad info out there, and I'm sure it gets too frustrating for many. Plus, if their tank doesn't go well, or crashes and they lose livestock, that can be enough for many.

Well, perhaps we may get a freshwater subforum after all. From Revhtree this morning:

I would think it would be cool for you to do a build thread! Most of us started in freshwater anyway. I stopped freshwater after my beloved childhood goldfish died at 18 or 19 years old. I got a fancy goldfish after that but he died after 5 years and I gave up.

Big news indeed!

I know I’m excited… it will bring in a lot of new hobbyists, and will let the freshwater gurus really record their experience and successes in an organized way!

IMO high tech planted is just as tough as an SPS reef. Some of the ADA tanks, as well as the contest planted tanks in Europe and Asia are amazing works of art.
I fully agree with that.

I’ve also seen a certain degree of confusion among some reefers with the principles of plant and algae culture, particularly in regard to specifics of biology!

I think the crossover would help both sides of the hobby achieve a more complete understanding of the tanks we all know and love!

Fresh water would be good
Hopefully we will get one.
I don't see a problem with it .

Possibly harder. I had an sps reef years ago it wasn't that much more work than the lps reef I had. Corals grew and looked good. My high tech 125g build was a nightmare of constantly fidgeting with co2 and nutrients. Algae would pop up and there was really not much that would eat it. I had a hefty assortment of snails and shrimp. A lot of the fish that would possibly eat algae would also eat some of the plants. Sps reef had a purple tang, a mimic tang, and a foxface, and a decent cuc with an urchin, no algae would encroach and none of them ate my corals broke a few sure but thats just more frags.
