General DIY LED thread

Hey Theatrus!

I would take a few, but don't have any way to reflow them, unfortunately :(


Any comments on the LED layout on those synjet pendants I'm doing? I've got the K16, and still deciding what to do for the supporting LEDs. I'm thinking of two sunplus cool whites, and a 3-up with maybe a regular blue, violet, and unsure on the third diode. Not sure if a lime or something else would be a good bet. Only room for three total stars to support the K16.

I’m going to throw one out there: PC Amber. I still use these to add a strong red punch for Acans.

No weird bleed over of color to other corals?

Or are you spot lighting?

I know a few people used PC Amber over on NR before limes and mints were even thought of so it doesn't surprise me

Just blended in. I treat it as a warm white without the blue end. It’s peak is just shifted further over from a lime/mint.

You know what, the amber sounds like a good fit, actually. A 3up of violet, amber, and regular blue, with the K16 and the sunplus white should do well together, especially with that hefty dropoff the white has right around 550. Better than using a warm white just to crank it down to keep the red under control.

Also, take a look at my LDD-L PCB thread, I'm just about ready to order PCBs, just need a suitable logo or graphic of some sort, and it's still open for comment and requests :)

and on PCamber I actually think that would have some use in the no white lights. something like:

8xRB or k16 at 600ma
4xViolet
2xBlue
1xCyan
2xMint
2xPC Amber

All 6 channels being controllable.

Agree on the slim: not enough surface area to cool by convection alone, and it’s not designed for a top mounted fan. You could use a blower on the interior, but again are bitten by surface area.

What’s wrong with the top mounted fan that are designed for them? Also, I test fit regular PC fans on my makerslim and they fit fine.

because they don't sell the fan cover only give a link to a 3d printed option. and once you add the fan, get the cover 3d printed. your basically same price as the rapidled heatsink with fan enclosure and that is a better option imo. this comes from someone with makersled slims, i'd swap them out in a second if I could even up.

I bought a bunch of components for a diy led 2 years ago now and I’m trying to get back up to speed- moving states and having another kid got in the way. This’ll be for a 180 gallon, mixed reef

6’ makerslim heat sink
6-up ldd board and 1000 mA drivers
4 x 12v pvc fans

2x adjustable 60v 7.2amp meanwell powersupplies

Combination of 10w LEDs, all 1000mA forward current:m, 12v:

RB, RB+400nm actinic combo, CW,NW

Coralux Storm Controller.


Plan was to run 4 of the 10w 12v leds in series, off a single driver, then have 3 groups of 2 of these. Essentially 2 channels since I can dim several drivers from one dimmer channel on the storm. Other drivers will be for additional 3w strings, and moonlights.

But now I need to update my wavelengths and led options. Will be trawling the thread for info!

Good point. Mine will be hidden behind cabinetry, but I see where this would be a concern for people looking fir a good aesthetic.

That is nice.

Cooling capacity appears to be around 90w/foot based on capacity for 30x3w leds? That about right?

I have two 20" versions and have built rigs in maybe a dozen, they are very nice :) I honestly think they are the best looking DIY option available in situations that they will work. The only downside is the limited internal space, LDD-H drivers will not fit inside. BlueAcro drivers will, as will LDD-L (300-700mA) drivers. The fan is the same as the one in the makers slim kit, so far as I can tell.

LED group Buy has them in 20" still, looks like Rapid stopped carrying the 20.

Yeah, I’d be all over the 20” if I didn’t have a 6’ makerslim in my basement awaiting use.

Not too bothered by aesthetics since it’ll be in a cabinet, but I’d have gone with that other one if they’d been available 2 years ago

They were available, just not really advertised. I bought my last one in ?July? of 2017, after sitting on the idea for a long time.

I have no idea why they weren't advertised more, they would have been really popular, and the price is very fair- I paid $60 for mine (20") at the time on special, plus maybe $10 for the fan. I have a feeling they didn't sell well enough and are being discontinued.

What I really miss is the T-slot profiles heatsinkUSA used to do, they were really nice for large fanless setups.

People still running the less in series to get the voltage matched to the power supply, then running parallel strings?

So, for 12v 1000mA leds with an adjustable power supply capable of 7 amps-

4s4p would be 48v and 4 amps total

I doubt this part has changed much, just won’t have time to trawl threads while I’m doing single dad duty, and if I have to rethink power supplies, I might as well rethink heatsinks and controllers too
