Hi All,

After a ~8 year break I'm getting back into the hobby. My interest in marine aquariums is as much about the livestock as it is the engineering and biome creation for a healthy tank.

I got my start back in 2015 after following the BRS 52 weeks series. I had a 135 gallon custom acrylic corner tank in the living room with a remote sump in my basement - no hauling buckets of water was my goal and it was great. Unfortunately I took it down a little over a year later due to a move. New house had a fully finished basement so the remote sump was out, much to my disappointment but house + neighborhood for kids is what the wife wanted and you know how that goes. I gave a redsea 350 a shot for a year but the hauling of buckets and intense work travel crushed my interest pretty quickly and that was taken down and sold to a friend.

Fast forward to today - I've got two young kids and figured a saltwater tank would be a great way to teach them a little science, responsibility, and make some memories. In November I went on a shopping spree including a Innovative Marine 100EXT and all the related supplies to get the tank running. My primary focus is healthy fish, a healthy microbiome, and use of a refugium over protein skimmer. The tank is set up for the addition of corals later, but that'll be down the road.

I really appreciate the incredible resource R2R has been so far. I'm looking forward to being a contributing member of the community here.

Welcome to Reef2Reef!
I think using a reef tank to teach your kids responsibility and a bit of science is a great idea. I recommend spending another $30-$50 for a cheap compound microscope. It's useful when dealing with certain algae/protist/bacteria outbreaks and your kids will have a way to enjoy the tank even while there are no fish or coral in the first weeks/months.

This is a fantastic idea, thank you! We've been talking a lot about the things that go on in the tank we can't see - bacteria cycles, potential diseases, copepods, etc. I'll be getting one of these for sure.
