Gfo placement in media reactor?

I had measured when i did it months ago-it stripped me almost down to zero, and used less than asked for-but i had it sitting at the bottom and it tumbled like crazy-then i saw this picture and thought maybe it needs to sit higher up in the water column and it would tumble less

Looks right to me. Dont know what reactor you are using. With my Phosban its plastic then foam then gfo at bottom then plastic then sponge at top. I also usually run the bottom sponge in line with the bottom plastic diffuser. So the gfo is at the bottom less water to make it tumble.

If its stripping too fast. Start with 2 tablespoons. Test next day if not where ya want add another tablespoon or 2 to the reactor. Do same thing next day til you have it where ya want. For me it tends to last about 14 days more if you increase flow a lil each week, and send a burst thru the gfo every cpl days to get it all mixed in the tumble again. As well as flush detritus from the reactor sponges a little bit.

If it strip your tank in the pass I would use less as well tumble it slowly.
More media strips the tank and running it faster strips the tank faster as well, these are the 2 things you want to avoid using GFO

I'm a big fan of lanthanum chloride and a calculator. for the GFO, you want the water flow to just have a few grains dancing on top of the bulk of he media. think fluidized bed. too much flow and the GFO will decentigrate too little and it will clump and water will channel through the media and do nothing,

Does anyone worry about how smalls the pellets/ sand is and it leaking through your reactors into your sump. I got a Nyos 2.0 and seems that smalls amounts of the GFo leaks out. I put it into a bucket before so i could see if some would leaks through the reactor into the Sump and it does. Is this an issue or is this ok? Never used GFO before. Just making sure this is common. I did rinse the gfo pretty before. Using bought BRS Bulk GFO Granular Ferric Oxide 1LB
