So for some reason for the last 3 nights in a row Tamatoa has left his shell and roamed around the tank for quite a while. I've had him for a year now and he does have two shells to choose from. During the day he wears his shell all day.

This is really weirding me out, anybody know why he does this?

hey, kenny, sorry but had to pull you out ;) maybe he likes to sleep in the buff:)
poss add a couple more shells ,he may find one to his liking??

In my experience, hermits are divas lol If they don’t like the shells offered, they’ll stay in the current shell while constantly looking for a new one. Your guy seems to have taken that to a new level lol I’d defiantly add some more shells. Give him a variety and see what happens.
Also, depending on the type of hermit he is, he may need a specific shell shape. Like Halloween hermits need cone shaped shells.

Hey thanks for the replies guys! John over at reefcleaners told me a while back that they like murex shells (like this picture) but the one I bought was so heavy! I even dremeled off a bunch of the spikes to loose weight and he still only tried it for a minute before going back to his old shell.

I'll go ahead and add that one back in and another shell I have (and hopefully he'll stop being such a freak)!
