Just received my new ACA 150 today. Getting things ready to plumb and noticed this. The overflow box is framed in with glass, which is cool, but then there is plastic siliconed around it with the weirs and there is a gap in-between. Seems like a detritus trap to me. There are slots cut towards the bottom in the plastic to allow water out, but it still seems like it should be sealed off to me?

It's designed for a herbie overflow.
1 return, 1 drain, 1 emergency overflow.

Yes, the SCA is considerably cheaper. Their black friday deal was too good to pass up though. $1k+ cheaper than everyone else AND it included shipping.
I did look at glasscages. Their stuff looks really nice. The tank prices aren't bad at all, but it was almost 1k for shipping.
And I would still have to build a stand.

Wonder if I could stuff some foam in there and turn it into a "pod hotel" of sorts.

This is a double wall design. It's meant to improve flow/filtration lower in the tank... the area between the walls DOES end up filled with stuff, but it never caused a problem. At best, it's a home for pods and cryptic growth and at worst, you lose the "low flow/filtration " and it acts like a single walled overflow.
