glass top screen top or no top

just a quick question . what top do you use ? I have a 220 gallon and I use glass tops but they get dirty and may block some of the light ?I clean them but the inside still gets foggy . do you think a screen top is better .

Yes, I believe the screen top to be much better in most every way. The 1/4" clear mesh allows more light and oxygen exchange than a glass cover.

On Bulk Reef Supply, the guy shows a tutorial on how to make your own screen covers! I havent had the funds to do it myself, but the supplies look cheap and easy to find... Go to there site and go to the tab that says "sumps, tanks, and refugiums"... then go to diy screen tops... it has a brief video, and if you dont wanna go hunting at home depot, you can order a package on their site... but its like 4 times more expensive than in home depot!

Its very cool and easy... looks really discreet when its done correctly! Give it a look see, tell us what you think!

I generally like screen tops. They're easy to make, cheap, and allow for good gas exchange and light penetration.

However, if you're in a place that gets really dry, I'd go with a glass top for evaporative loss prevention.

Screen tops for sure. Lost couple fish from jumping. Made them myself...very simple.
Order 1/4" mesh.from brs, and the rest from hd, or lowes.
Made 3 screens for around $30

Water evaporation is a good thing...gas exchange, and helps keep water cooler.
