Something has started going wrong with my Goni seemingly overnight, does anyone have an ID for what could be wrong here and what I can do to fix it?

calc 420
Nitrates 5ppm
Pho 0.1
Salinity 1.026
DkH 7.4

No sir, just spreading further up the Goni.

Tank is around 6 months old, I have some rocks with coralline on them but some of the dry rock is taking a bit longer to seed.

I feed coral nutrition and meaty foods such as mysis every now and again. I’m unsure of the light, BUT i believe it’s not one of the best brands I can get it only set me back around £100 at the time of buying, I’m looking to upgrade to an AI prime but can’t afford it just yet.

I’ll attach a picture of how this has spread

6 months is a fairly new tank. You’ll see more consistent success as the months and years go by. The AI Prime is a good choice. Good lighting is really a solid place to start your reef.

Do you think this would be the issue with the Goni? I’d like to do my best to save it but if it’s a tank maturity issue, if I lose it I won’t replace it until it’s more mature.

I’ve been suggested on Reddit to take the Goni out, and frag off the piece that has the issue, they said it’s “brown jelly disease” - would your advice be the same?

Those brown stuff on the right side of the gonio certainly looks like necrosis. When coral tissues dies, pathogenic microbes can grow on them. This will be stressful for the surrounding tissues, and can potentially spread around to other healthy corals.

What you can do is, use a airline to carefully siphon out (and throw away) the brown mass. Make sure do not injure healthy parts during the process. Then, turn off the wave maker and carefully take out the coral. Use aquarium water to rinse the area as thoroughly as possible. If you remove all the necrotic tissues, you may be able to save it.

Don't just yank it out of the water... If the flow blasts the brown jelly around... It's not good.

Definitely looks suspicious from the picture. I’d do something.

‘Spontaneous‘ tissue necrosis in gonoiporas is very common. Move it to a hospital tank and treat it with Ciprofloxacin or amoxicillin or any antibiotic you can get your hands on asap. Typical high-dose of Ciprofloxacin is 10-15mg/L (same dosage for Amoxicillin). You can also combine Ciprofloxacin and amoxicillin for their treatment (I have). Using a combo of both, I’ve had goniporas slough off the infected tissue, revealing healthy tissue underneath, and continue to prosper.

You might also try @AquaBiomics ’s low dose treatment of your whole tank if you have another coral present with this issue. I’ve had excellent luck with his and my slightly more aggressive version:

BJD (brown jelly disease) can often be treated with low doses, but IME goniopora are tolerant of high antibiotic doses.

Good to hear it’s treatable, but anti biotics are not available to buy over the counter in the UK, unless you are talking about some reef specific anti biotics available at an LFS?

I’m talking about pharmaceutical grade. Every country is different, and some countries have some antibiotics designed for pet use. I would try any broad-spectrum antibiotic you can get your hands on, whether it’s for fish or dog/cat or humans. There are also places for online purchase that may ship to you from outside of the UK.

Looks like there could be a variety available under these names:

Fix Mox Forte (amoxicillin 500mg)
Fin Flox Forte (Ciprofloxacin 500mg)
Fin Flex Forte (Cephalexin 500mg, no experience with this)
Fin Pen Forte (Penicillin 500mg)

Stock up if you find them, antibiotics are very useful for combatting BJD and for the prophylactic treatment of various anemones.

I had almost the same size/color goni my tank is 7 months old. Goni did well for a while then died…. I was told main causes was they need to be spot fed often when they are large. They don’t like sitting on the sand bed either(this is where I had mine also, even though I didn’t notice sand irritating it … it’s just what I was told when I was looking for answers…) also my alk dropped pretty quickly as I wasn’t checking properly.

Really sorry about your Goni but it’s good to hear from someone that has sort of the same conditions as me, same age tank, same size. Also had it on the sand bed, and I haven’t spot fed it (I was thinking the light would be enough) so these are all things I can look at to help fix the problem, thank you so much!

For me i was leaning toward alk swing…. The sand bed thing was odd for me cause the person I got it from said he had it in the sand also. When I went to googling I seen others say they target feed all their gonis and I don’t recall who but they had several varieties of goni and all we’re doing well(on YouTube) then I thought to myself I have never target fed mine etc….

Had a similar symptom happen to my red ora goni. Happy for 6 months then started receding and had a bare spot.
My Bluespot puffer had developed a taste.

Did you also have the goo appear? What did you do? I don’t have a puffer, I used to but he went to a better home as he wasn’t getting on with anything in the tank
