I think people's perspectives are very much affected by the local context. There are refrigerated trucks storing stacked corpses 25 miles from my house. When full, they drive to Pennsylvania to be cremated as the backlogs here are 3 weeks or more. I knew a lovely little old couple from church that passed a couple weeks ago, three days apart. This is a little less abstract when it is your own neighbors.
