Gorgonian question

I have a common purple "knobby" gorgonian that needed moved, it's about 4" and Y shaped, encrusting base to the ruble it's mounted on. It had started to encrust to a large rock so I cut it and moved it. I noticed that there was a sliver of purple flesh left behind. That sliver has now spread and is showing polyps.

My question is, over time will this turn into a gorgonian like the piece it came from, in other words standing upright and all?

It should regenerate and look the same. After all, it is a clone of the original.
