GSP Regeneration or Dying?

Hi, does this look like it’s getting worse or possibly regeneration? I’ve been battling the melting and changed its location in the tank but I’m not so sure this is a good sign or not? I’m still very new to corals and this is my first one. My second coral (hammer) is doing great.

First - GSP can come back from almost anything. Second - I don't see any evidence of regeneration - and also no reason to throw the rock out, etc. Just wait - why did it die off in the first place?

I'm having a hard time figuring that out. I've been chasing nitrates and phosphates because they went to the max amounts on the Hanna checkers. I barely feed my tank since it's just one clownfish so have been doing a lot of water changes over the winter and can't get them within the limits. It started out great and the GSP actually grew and doubled it's size. Then it closed up when the wavemaker died and just melted all winter no matter what I did. My hammer coral is happy though. I had the GSP over a year and couldn't get it to stop melting.

I just put it at the bottom of the tank last night as lfs instructed and just waiting it out. I just installed a new wavemaker so IDK if it'll help or not.

I would (if able and it's not too depressing for you) - leave it where it was - but it will grow anywhere. If you look in my signature - on my YouTube you can see my GSP. I also had a rock that sat in a bin - in cold water - I had cut a leather coral off - it grew back after a year - as others have mentioned - you can get it almost anywhere (GSP) - And - there are many people who would send it to you for free (and even some LFS). I'm concerned though that it died - and thats almost impossible to kill - so I would try to think of anything different. Additionally - it can also be that other corals (if you had any) can release toxins that kill it.

I think I’ve spent more time discussing what to try with the LFS than I ever have. I certainly need to do some serious water changes. If that doesn’t work then I may have to try phosguard again and the nitrogen rx.

As long as it still has a mat, I’ll leave it in there. I’m not letting it depress me.

Considering you mentioned you are barely feeding the tank and have been doing lots of water changes I’m wondering if your nitrates are actually high. Possible test error? Have you double checked with a different test kit? If you test a fresh batch of saltwater is it also out of range?

I will actually test the new water as I’m currently making new.

Just now, I have a reading of NO3: 51.7ppm and PO4: 0.61ppm in my tank

Fresh SW Tests:

NO3: 2.4ppm
PO4: 0.04ppm

I’m assuming I needing to rinse my jars better.

I don't think either of those are gonna hurt the GSP. I was looking through some of your past threads and this GSP has been declining for a while now it seems. Someone in one of those previous threads suggested upgrading your light, I agree with them.

Do you have a suggestion which one you'd do for a 20 H? I like to stay under $200 if possible. I'm not sure how to shop for lights.

Nicrew gen1s are cheap on Amazon and will probably grow GSP like a weed. Amazon product ASIN B08HVJJLX3
Consider looking for something with more PAR if you want to keep more light demanding corals.

FWIW. GSP is perhaps one of the least 'needy' of any coral. It grows in high or low light. - As said - if you are planning to expand - more light will be better - but I do not think light is causing your issue with GSP

So you went from 50 nitrates to 2.4 and .6 phosphate to .03 and you are attributing that to testing error?

That’s a bonkers swing - I am curious about that one

What are your other parameters?

GSP grows like crazy with decent light and water - mine grows whether I have .16 or .03 Phosphate and 5 to 20 nitrate

I have lots that you can have for free if you are near DFW

If you suspect light you can rent a par meter - my GSP grows in anything from 50 to 150 par

Can you give us a pic of your tank?

Also - GSP can absolutely die. I had lots of dead GSP that was stung and not getting light along the back wall of my tank where I had let it carpet upwards

Gsp grows like algae. it can live thru anything. If it is dying id say it’s not your no3 or po4.
What’s your total gallons , fish , light you currently use etc . Id stop doing anything and test day to day. Check salinity. Also things dying will raise nutrients

I can’t get gsp to grow. But I can grow literally everything else. Zoas, sps, plate corals, clams

Wanted to cover my back wall with gsp. Nope. Didn’t grow at all.
