I'm currently shopping for a powerhead for my 31 gallon lagoon (24.5”L x 18.5”W x 15.75”H). I really would like to get a nero 3 as far as price and size, but those are hard to find right now. Would the smallest gyre (not the icecap one) be too large for this tank? I'm not opposed to an mp10.. was just wondering about the gyre, because I like the "wall of water" idea and I'd be able to get better direction out of it compared to the other options. I'd hate to buy one then have it bee too powerful for the tank..

Personally I wouldn’t go with a gyre just because you won’t be able to utilize its power in that size of a tank. Especially with the length being only 24”

I've got 2 icecap gyres in my 32 gallon, I run them both at 30% power. I used to have 4 powerheads in effort to eliminate dead area's, but powerheads dont move water like gyres do. My cyano problem dissapeared in a few days after adding the second gyre.

I also hated powerheads in my tank cause they take up so much room, gyres take up very little space.

1 gyre is usually fine, 2 if you wanted to run alternating currents. Lord of cinder, how you liking elden ring?

Did you know that the Icecaps pull apart so you can run one at ‘half’ the size?
I actually never though of that but that is pretty smart, any weird vibration sounds while running it like that if you have tried it?

Honestly if that works I would get the icecap 4k and run half as you can use it if you upgrade tanks later

No, it ran normally. So I’m thinking that 1/2 size at low speed might be what you are looking for. Otherwise, it would be too much for a 2-foot tank, I’m afraid; especially with sand.

Most gyres (even if you remove half) might still be too powerful for such a small tank. And the problem with running them at really low speeds to compensate is that they tend to gunk up a lot quicker.

Do you have a sand bottom?

yes, I have 3" sand bed, and its fine sand, but its about 1.5 years old, so its really packed down. Only on the highest power settings it blows around. I run one gyre during the day at 30% (for my clams sake), and run both at night at 40%. I got my first gyre back in Aug or Sept, I still havent cleaned it yet and still runs fine.

I have icecap gyre in a 14g mounted vertically. I like it since I can add flow across the bottom and the top in opposite directions. I get nice random flow that way.

So it seems like the consensus is that a 2k icecap would NOT be too large for my 31 gallon (2ft) tank. Thanks all for the input!

I tried the Icecap 1k on a Nuvo 20 (2') and water was almost going out the top of the tank @ 10%. That was with both gyre half attached, didn't tried with a single. I couldn't place it too low either because it caused a sandstorm.
