I run 4 gyres - I've had 2 FX 350s and 2 4ks. (as my FX 350s died I replaced with 4ks) thinking the larger shaft would run better. Now, around 18 months to 2 years later, one of the 4ks the shaft just rattles back and forth, but won't turn. I can manually turn it just fine, not jammed up. This is exactly what happened to my FX 350s when I ended up trashing them.

Is there something I'm missing? Or do the motors just lose their magnetic rotations?

It doesn't seem to matter how much I clean them, they eventually all go to this gyre grave years (usually under 2 years) where it rattles back and forth, but never rotates. I can pull it out of the water and manually turn it and eventually it'll start spinning for 30 seconds then go back to rattling and not turning.

Sometimes they start up spinning backwards instead of forward and so I have to futz with powering it off and back on until it spins forwards. Just trying to figure out if this normal for gyres. What powerheads would create the largest flow for the buck equivalent to gyre flow. I have a 36" wide 6ft long tank and two gyres on each end created perfect flow patterns for this size tank. Or do I just plan to spend $500 a year to replace two out of the gyres each year? (Seems highly wasteful too).

I'm not familiar with your gyres, but my icecap gyres are about 3.5 years old now, never had an issue. And if any issue, coralvue has excellent customer service so I'm not worried. Sorry you're having a hard time, hope you figure it out good luck

I'll have to work with coralvue directly, I got several of them directly through them in the past.
