Been wanting a Christmas wrasse for a while and saw these two fish labelled as such in the LFS. Was wondering if anybody could ID these guys. H. ornatissimus is the closest thing I can find however they both have the same pattern on the lower part of the face and the solid blue line running through the entire length of the body. I have not been able to find pictures of an H. ornatissimus with the same markings, however I’ve read there is a high degree of variability within the species. I may just pick one up anyways, as I’m sure they’ll look good if they turn male, but I’d like a good ID on them. Thanks for the help!

The only two Halichoeres I know of that are known as Christmas Wrasses are H. biocellatus and H. ornatissimus. Obviously, through looks alone it’s a Biocellatus but if we went deeper, Ornatissimus is no longer available as Hawaii has shut.

H. claudia is also commonly called "Christmas" wrasse here in the US.

I forgot about that one, over here we don’t really see Claudia at all so it’s an easy species to forget.
