halloween hermit crab

All I can find as far as negatives is they get kinda big and can move around some corals and rocks, but nothing about eating them or fish. Maybe a large snail for a new shell though.

Perhaps others have some first hand experiences with these guys. ;)
Reviving this thread thanks to google.

I put a Halloween hermit in my tank yesterday. Today I only saw 1 nassarius snail and thought “hmm. I wonder if that Halloween got them.” I looked, couldn’t find any shells. So, when I fed tonight, expecting the nassarius to come up from the sand, only 1 was there. The hermit and snail were pretty close to each other and the hermit darted for the nassarius and started to attack it! It was thrilling.

I’d stay away from these guys unless you’ve got big conch shells cuz they will destroy snails.

Mines going in my sump for now. I love how cool they are but the sump is his new home until I can find some shells.

They are super chill for hermits and are too slow to eat most snails, especially fast ones like nassarius
I have had them for 5 years all together, they don’t touch anything that has similar shells to them.
Similar experience to you, they really are chill hermit crabs. My electric blue is similar but gets in more trouble knocking over frags because of its bigger shell

Mine was not.. I don't think I've seen a hermit crab dart so fast to some food lol.

I wouldn’t get another, they look great when you actually get to see them but the trouble they cause outweighs that for me.

I have to agree. They're super cool, but with the potential of getting to a decent size, they aren't worth it, unless you've got some big shells. I think I'm going to buy some, and see if I can't get him "fixed" lol

Just snagged my first halloween hermit after like 11 years in the hobby

Agreed. Spontaneous purchase admittedly.
"Looking at animals" killing time with my 2 year old waiting for big sis to get out of dance class lol
I know how that is. My 4-year old just had to have the purple fish, which was a purple dottyback. That fish is such a jerk. I've been trying to think of a way to have it "disappear" but I don't know if I can catch the dang thing.

Terrible picture but Halloween Hermits do use turbo snail shells. This one had bigger cone shells to choose from. It went with the turbo shell after walking around buck naked for a day or two

Got my Halloween hermit several months ago. Did see him kill my conch for his shell even though I had plenty of empty shells sitting around. Didn’t worry about it much but now my snail population is diminishing and thought it was due to having high magnesium (close to 1600). I’ve since fixed that and have purchased more snails but they seem to keep dying. Chalked it up to maybe it’s the 3 wrasses that I have. But with that said I did purchased additional emerald crabs and placed them on the left side of my tank. I have a 180 gallon tank with two major section of rocks. Left and right side. My emerald crabs on the right side come out at night but I can’t find any of the emerald crabs on the left side (where my Halloween hermit carb seems to hang around the most). Read up that you do not want to mix emerald crabs with Halloween hermit. I also purchased about 30 or 40 blue leg crabs at the time I purchased my Halloween crab and 2 months later I don’t seem to see many blue legged hermit crabs around. But I do seem to have a lot of new empty shells around my aquarium. So not sure what is going on but I’m starting to lean towards it being my Halloween crab. I did have a clam that started to close up a lot (not feeling well) and I could tell it was not as health as it has been. The next day the Halloween hermit crab had pushed its shell open and eating away. I ended up pulling the clam out before it deteriorated to badly (I do have two other clams that are doing great and the Halloween crab have left them a lone). I would have like to see if the clam would have made a recovery but the Halloween crab made sure that didn’t happen. In any case, starting to conclude they aren’t worth it. I only got him because of his black and orange colors.
