I am upgrading my tank not for a big fish but for small fishes. I like having a lot of smaller fishes. The largest fish would be a Scopus Tang - tiny ATM.

Never upgraded for a fish, just a bigger tank and bigger possibilities. Started with a 60g aio, then a 125, and now 220. Thats as large as I can go as no more room in my office (10x10 ) and I find if the tank is where I spend most of m y time, I take better care of it plus I enjoy it a lot more than if it was in the living room where I had my 125. We don't use that room so never really sat in there to enjoy my tank. Not to mention I'm getting a new couch set and then will not have room for a bigger tank lol's.

2016-2018 A tank crashed had wiped out a lot of corals in this tank (Primer paint in another room)

2018-2021 that huge toadstool was a lps and sps killer. Nothing grew except the softies in that tank. Palys, zoas, gsp and rhodactic (behind left rock) Got rid of the toadstool and within a few weeks, was able to keep some lps which moved to the new tank.

New tank. No toadstools allowed!! (actually there is a tiny one. When it gets big, it's out) Finally a thriving tank.

We upgrade our tanks for many reasons but have you ever upgraded your tank to keep a specific big fish? Let's talk about it today!

Have you ever upgraded your tank to keep a BIG FISH? What fish and was it worth it? Tell us about it!

My answer there is sort of. I have been in and out of the hobby since 1995. I started with a 55 gallon tank and an under gravel filter, and I could barely keep fish alive.
Fast forward to 2006 and I had a 65 gallon reef that was fairly successful until the aptasia moved and and we decided to tear the tank down because we were going to be moving.
2012 I had a 150 full reef that I could barely afford to keep up, and ended up selling the tank after a move.
2017 225 acrylic tank that was previously an aquaponics tank and I had horrible Cynano issue that we were just not able to over come, then the tank crashed due to the AC in the house quitting in the middle of summer. This tank was very successful despite some of the issues.
2022 I started another 225 almost the same foot print, but this is a glass planet tank that I love. Still dealing with some new tank issues, but over all happy with the results so far. That being stated I am much more patent now that what I have been in the past.

I have upgyawhile back because I had two many tanks and combined both into a 220. Mainly because I have a emperor angel which I got at an inch and watched him color change into an adult. He was in my 92 gallon corner tank and needed more space. My other tank was a 110 gallon show tank but wouldn’t have been much of an upgrade. So bought a 220 setup and was able to sell the 110 at least it helped offset the cost. I still have three more tanks to sell

Before moving we upgraded from a 75 to a 180 to a 380 gallon for all my tangs and angels (Vlamingii tangs and koran angels grow super fast). After selling that tank and briefly getting out of saltwater, we started with a 13.5 gallon, which upgraded to a bunch of other tanks. Of course, I started a 65 gallon and really missed my bigger fish, so have been buying juveniles of various fowlr fish (large angels, a sohal tang, broomtail wrasse, etc). Now we bought a 180 gallon to replace that, and are hoping to upgrade that in about 2 years as we remodel our house.

That's a definite YES. I had a 4' 120 for a couple of years and couldn't get the fish that I always wanted (and previously kept). Wanted to add angels, triggers, large tangs, and possibly others. When I found a 300DD for a crazy deal I jumped on it. 6 years later and the fish are getting pretty big and beautiful:

lieutenant tang - 8" and at least 1.5" thick
pyroferus tang - 5" and has a beautiful crescent tail
scopus tang - 4" was a carryover from the 120 but definitely happier
naso tang - 8-9" female is approaching [and will surpass] the bulk of the lieutenant
foxface - 9" very close to the bulk of the lieutenant
blueface angel - 6" and absolutely stunning... full adult coloration. Got it as a 2" juvenile.

I have just added a small niger trigger to the display. Love the movement and coloration of these guys.

Will eventually add the assasi and humu triggers to the display. They are currently about 3.5" each but live in the 75 lagoon I have attached.

My husband made it. I have info and pics I can send you. He also did the same thing with my new tank. TV Mounts so the lights can be moved out of the way. He has a machine shop so was able to make his own stands but you can buy. made with Angle iron and then spray painted when all cutting down. I have a write up somewhere I sent to someone else. He also modified the cords so there was 1 cord going to plug and not three. He used molds to pot them. or whatever you call it.. My new lights he could not do that with

I like tangs and Foxface/rabbitfish and they get big. I started with a 75G tank, then a 125G one, then a 180G one, and then I bought a 210G one. Within the next year I will get a 550G one. That will probably be the last one until I find a house I know I'm going to stay in and then I'll do something crazy like 3-4000G or more.

I have a Dussumieri tang that will get 20+ inches and a Sohal and Clown tang that will get up to 16". Also want to get a blonde Naso as mine died a couple of years ago. Definitely need to go big to keep these guys happy.

Love that blonde naso
That was Mr. T (cause the yellow dorsal fin looks like a mohawk, lol). He unfortunately died when I moved him to my 210G tank a couple years back. I'm not sure why. He died within about a day or two of the move. No signs of illness or being attacked. All the other fish made the transition fine. Losing a fish always stinks but especially when the fish seems so healthy. Must have been stress is all I can think.

I did upgrade from 75gallon to 10,5 feet 300 gallon to be able to keep more tangs then just Kole in 75. My favorites are Naso Elegans and Zebrasoma Desjardinii, both in together with other 6 tangs, now almost a year in the big tank, doing great together. I put them in in 2 batches, all very small except Kole tang which I already had, he was in second batch, no issues at all so far.

As a newbie I fell victim to the "it will only get as big as it's tank" schpiel, and I bought a horseshoe crab for 50 cents bc I felt sorry for it.
She was the size of a quarter then.
Fast forward a few years.
Now she's the size of a dessert plate and has caused 2 tank upgrades so far.
Any monster-tank owners that can give her a good home when she molts again????

How funny. Im doing the exact same thing. I have a 120 4’ currently and my lfs had a 300DD as their display and one of the corner seals blew. Im pretty handy in general and I asked the owner if I could have it and he said if I can figure out how to get it home its mine. Now I have a mostly disassembled 300gallon tank in my garage. Im pumped for when it all comes back together, I have a juvenile majestic angel that I want to give her all the room.

upgraded to a 150g to keep a yellow tang, upgraded to a 300 to keep a powder blue and upgraded to a 550 to keep 3 yt, 1 sailfin, 1 blue hippo and my powder blue. They are coming up on 10 years and my blue hippo is HUGE, would need 2 hands to hold him.
