Headed to Atlanta

I am headed to Atlanta for work next Sunday. The hotel I'm staying at is only a few minutes ride to the Atlanta Aquarium. I'm looking forward to checking it out, I've heard it's awesome.

Anyone familiar with that area and anything else to do while there? Thanks!

We have been to the atlanta aquarium and it really is awesome. You can literally spend the whole day there and the whale sharks are unbelievable. Not too sure on other things to do as we usually take the kids to six flags and it's too cold for that now.

I wish I could go to six flags, I've never been there. I've can't imagine the pump systems and wave makers to support whale sharks.

Thanks for the clarification! I'd probably have the cab driver taking me to the wrong spot! Although I wouldn't be upset arriving at a LFS :)

No problem. Everyone accidentally goes there instead of the GA Aquarium as intended. It’s clever naming by the LFS.

Call me crazy but I was going to recommend NOT going to coke world... I thought it was about the most boring attraction I’ve been to...

Stone Mountain park is all done up for Christmas, but it’s a little outside of town, long way to go if you don’t have a rental car.

If you’ve got some money to burn swimming with the whale sharks (or diving if you’re certified) is one of the top 5 things I’ve done all-time.

If you’re a walking dead fan and have a rental car you can make the hour-ish drive south to Senoia...

its not, its about 250 for the swim and about 400 for the dive IIRC. but totally worth it if you've got the disposable cash, the whale sharks like bumping into the swimmers. its pretty cool. they book up a ways ahead though, when i did it over the summer i had to make reservations about a month out. if you're going to be in town on a weekday you might have better luck then (i needed a Saturday), the dive is probably less crowded than the swim, this is their slow season so you might luck out, but I'd call now and see what's available, don't wait till you get there. the Penguin and Otter encounters are pretty cool too and are only about 60-70 bucks.

I also love the walking dead!

Google Senoia, GA. that's the town they used for Woodbury and its sort of been converted to a Walking Dead Mecca, the set for Alexandria is right next to it, but you cant get very close. Nic & Norman's has really good food, and my wife and I sat across from Greg Nicotero and about a half dozen crew guys last time we were there. a lot of cast & crew hang out there when they're shooting. there's a gift shop that has a pretty cool mini-museum in the basement with a handful of props like Darryl's original motorcycle, and a couple of others, its not huge, but still cool. you'll need a rental car to get there, its a ways outside of Atlanta. there are bus tours of sets from the show that leave from Senoia, but we've always just driven around ourselves, there's lots of guides online with addresses you can plug into GPS to take you to various sets. I think there might be one bus tour that leaves from Atlanta if you don't have a rental car, not 100% sure but might be worth googling if you don't have your own transportation.

Varsity and Vortex are 2 classic burger places that I like to go to. If you’ve got a nice stipend, the view from the bar at the top of the Westin is awesome.

I go to Atlanta for work fairly often and I’m always frustrated trying to get to a LFS after work but before headed home. They’re all 45 minutes north of the city haha.

You must be a native! There’s no comparison between vortex and the varsity, vortex is awesome, varsity is cafeteria food. Natives only like it for the nostalgia of going there when they were a kid, but the food is actually pretty terrible! I’m a transplant and when I went I didn’t get why so many people were lining up for bad food... looks and tastes like something served by a gas station... (that’s not true, RaceTrac’s food is better) Big +1 on Vortex though, that’s an experience that shouldn’t be missed.

Also all the LFS’s are OTP North because that’s where Most of the folks who can afford reef tanks live :P

I volunteer at the Georgia Aquarium and would recommend that you consider signing up for a behind the scenes tour to see the water quality systems, vet clinic, coral propagation, etc. PM me if you want some recommendations about what to do. Like most big cities anything you want (and some things you shouldn't have, ha ha) is here.

Travel safe.

It's just an experience tbh. You're not wrong...it's not amazing, but every town has something along these lines for tourists to try.

I used to spend a lot of time in Atlanta. This time of year there isn't much going on. I'm always up for a braves game when they're in season.

Plenty of good food. I try to stay otp as mentioned above.
