Welocom to R2R Robert. I too took a looong break from saltwater tanks, almost 30 years for me. You are correct, there have been major changes in the hobby. Luckily we both found the place for answers to our questions. There are a lot of really helpful people here with tons of knowledge that they don’t mind sharing. If in doubt, just ask and they/we will spend the time to help. I would never have been very successful without them.
I agree. I had been watching the BRStv 52 weeks of reefing for a bunch of info there and that's where I learned of this forum. So hopefully i will be off to the right start. I know this build will take a while but i want to make sure i start off being successful and not have a ton of costly mishaps.

For me, the biggest mistake I feel that I’ve made is not getting the right drain setup from the start. I went with a Marineland 180 that only has 2 holes in each overflow. It’s going to be a pretty big project to change my plumbing to a Herbie overflow and securely running my returns over the back of the tank. My tank is in a cramped space and sump is in the basement so I’ll have to build the new setup and drill more holes in the floor before starting the conversion.

Welcome to Reef2Reef, there’s a whole world of information here that wasn’t available when you left the hobby last time. Enjoy! Soak up as much knowledge as you can, and post a build thread in the member forums so we can help you along your journey! :)
