Hello all... I am so delighted to be a part of this forum and once again thank you all for the wonderful welcome messages and wishes. I am blessed beyond words to describe this feeling!

An update on my reefing journey: Last week I did a 10% water change (matched the Salinity and temperature and used fresh rodi water, etc.) and went to the fish store to collect my already purchased fish (as I had purchased a bundle at the shop) but after they tested the water, they said ammonia was present and so was nitrite and nitrate.

They then advised me to do a 50% water change and dose 5ml of bacto blend on the same day and then to do another 50% water change after 3 days and to come sometime this week to test the parameters again if it was safe to add my livestock. He said the bacteria die off could have caused the ammonia to have risen again.

I took their advice and followed so: I did the two 50% water changes, 3 days apart and dosed 5ml bacto blend on the first. The last water change was on Friday the 10th of July.

The following were my test results on:

1. July 11th -
Nh4: 1
No2: 0.2
Salinity: 1.026 at 35 ppt

2. July 13th -
Nh4: 0.6
No2: 0.2
No3: I did not measure
Ph: 8.2
Kh: 9
Ammonia badge: white/grey
Temp. 25 to 26 avg.

My Nh4 seems to be decreasing and I thought I'd wait till 15th or 16th of July to do my next test of nh4 and n02 again.

My question is what if no2 is still present even after my nh4 drops to less than 0.05 ppm.

Should I:

1. Wait till no2 drops to 0 to then add my fish?

Or

2. Can I go ahead with adding my livestock since my tank has been cycycling for quite a while now?

I have live rock and live sand as well in my tank. There is also a presence of diatoms.

Note: The last time I waited for more than 3 weeks and no2 stayed at around 0.4 to 0.6 ppm and never dropped while my nh4 remained less than 0.05 and no3 was between 30 and 40 ppm.

Until, I joined the R2R community and was advised to do a small water change and the possibility to add my Clownfish.

Thank you dear R2R family once again for having me and helping me through this journey!!! I look forward to hearing from you all... :)

Kind regards and God bless!
- AJ

You don't have to test for or worry about nitrite at all, it's non-toxic in saltwater systems:

Just watch for the ammonia to fall to below about 0.25 ppm and you should be good to start to safely add some hardy livestock 🙂
