Hello,
Just getting back into the hobbie and going to do a 120/125 tank. Have two questions before I spend my hard earned dollars. 1) would you add a refeguim before you cycle the tank and 2) when first installing your equipment would a add a uv sterilizer or wait?? Thanks in advanced

OK, first things first.

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

I assume you have a sump already? and it has room for a refugium built in? Given that, you might as well start the fuge with the rest of the tank. But adding macro algae later to a running fuge area isn't a problem either.

If you don't have the refugium space in your sump, we have a whole different kettle of fish and need more info.

My best guess is, only a small percentage of reefers even use a UV sterilizer. I've never had in 20 years. If you feel you really want to have one, it's probably WAY easier to plumb it in right from the start rather than doing it as an after thought.

I would suggest waiting on the UV sterilizer until the tank is cycled. As far as the refeguim set it up when you start.

I would have done the UV from the get go. BRS did some videos and in my experience I wish I had done it from the beginning . And I also do my fuge from the beginning.

Welcome... probably easier to plumb in UV from start, but you can wait to turn it on.

Hi,
not an expert, but what i did was to set everything up dry first. that included planning, drilling, placing, plumbing, and testing the display and sump with ro/di bare-bottom. After everything ran for a week I emptied everything. I aquascaped the DT, added subtrate and a couple of pieces of LR to the refugium in my sump, and filled everything with saltwater. After a week i added some more live rock, Fritzyme and some mollies. i put Chaeto in the 'fuge. at the six week point now and just put the protein skimmer on the sump. so far so good.
