I could really use some advice.

I recently set up three frag tanks—partly for future use and partly to hold coral that isn’t in my main display. At this point, I’ve got a decent amount in them from fragging, trading, and buying.

My main issue is detritus buildup on the frag racks. How are you guys keeping it from settling on top and instead keeping it suspended or down in the tank?

One tank is mostly euphyllia with some zoas. I run a steady back-and-forth flow—if I increase it too much, my torches get irritated and close up, but with lower flow they look great.

The second tank is similar, with acanthos, Acans, gonis, alveoporas, and an elegance. Same situation with flow—too much and they’re unhappy, too little and detritus settles.

All my frag racks are 3D printed. I’m currently running an SCP-150 in the euphyllia tank aimed under the racks to keep things moving, but it still looks like detritus is settling on top.

It seems like this is starting to irritate the corals, (especially my HG colony and zoas) so I’m trying to figure out if this is more of a flow issue, a nutrient issue, or something else entirely.

How would you guys manage this?

Thanks in advance!

If you are able, have a backup frag rack that the frags can be transferred to so you can have one in use and one being cleaned/ spare at all times. This is also a great opportunity to do water changes when switching the racks out because the detritus often collects in similar areas because of flow, and can be easily siphoned out.
