Help Identifying Clown

Hi there,

When I was initially given this clown, I was told that this is a Gladiator Clown. However, I’ve seen LiveAquaria post gladiator clowns that looked nothing like mine.

Any idea of what this clown might be? Thanks in advance!

According to ORA, there is a fair amount of variability in Gladiators. Here is a link to read more. Whatever it is, it is a very nice fish!

Gladiator is simply a term used to describe when the head stripe has extra patterning, such as chinstraps or a helmet look (hence the name gladiator) or when the first and second stripes connect.

I'm guessing your fish is probably a ProAquatix Premium Black Gladiator.

Thanks. I guess after reading the blurb, it’s really about the white markings rather than color. So long as the white markings make that “gladiator helmet”, it’s a gladiator clown?

Now you know why I was hesitant to answer your question with a definitive yes or no! ;Shamefullyembarrased

The helmet and three unique markings (albeit not always the same), and a nod to the past seems to be what it takes to refer to a clownfish as a Gladiator. I think that you may find the ORA site and the Sea and Reef site helpful when trying to identify clowns, however these sites are not all inclusive.
