Help identifying REDSEA G1 vs G2 1000s

I am going to go look at a REDSEA 1000s this weekend as a replacement for my 300G that has a leaky bulkhead thru the bottom of the tank. yes i could tear it down and fix it but .... i am thinking replace for now, then fix. May become a FOWLR or something more suited in the future. wife may kill me though.

Tank was originally invoices on 11/2021 but not delivered and set up till Aug 2022, not sure that info helps. lots of excuses it sounds like.

I will be checking the SN. Tank has the split sump which leads me to think G2.

Anything else I can look into?

Anyone with this tank want to share ? i have been reading threads with this tank.

Well, I know the smaller G1 tanks had 10mm side panes, vs. 12mm for the g2…

I guess the real tell would be the plumbing; grey pipe for G1, red pipe for G2…

Also, g2 started in 2022, IIRC!

May I ask why you are going back to a Red Sea tank? They are known for seam failures. Waterbox make great tanks, as well as IM and Glasscages.

yes i sway away from the redseas generally. if this is a g2 i will take the risk after inspecting the seams.

I have never had a redsea and i know the g1s had the problems. my 300g is a 20year old truvue.

The price I am paying for the tank and equipment is why. If i dropped the tank I would still walk away happy with the purchase.

Unfortunately the cabinet has nothing to do with the failures regardless of what RS would have us believe. The failures are caused by silicone failing. Some of the early failures were large tanks and were bottom seam failures. There are now reports of side seams failing and the failures are being reported on small and large tanks as well as G2 models. There was a German group that did a study and determined it is silicone failing that causes the tank failures.
My reefer 170 failed at the upper right front corner.
I would highly advise you take some time to do some research on the failures before you make a decision you may regret.

Google isn’t giving me a clear answer on this one…

Identification of G2 includes aluminum cabinet reinforcements…

But, G2 tanks of any sort seem to have only become available in “early 2022”, short of a few oddball Reddit claims…

However, I did find a build thread here on R2R from early 2021 which talks about aluminum stand reinforcements…

So, it’s very unclear if the G1 1000s also has aluminum reinforcements in the stand, or if the G2 1000s just has more robust aluminum reinforcements…

— as @exnisstech said though, the stand isn’t the concern with these tanks; and this would be for identification of G1/G2 primarily…

I have seen the failure on a lot of the tank. looking into g2s failing currently. I have generally swarn off buying a Red sea and generally advise against it completely . This comes with enough other equipment that i am still ahead if the tank is no good.

my other problem is my 20year old truvu is leaking, looks like a bulkhead but can not 100% certain till the tank comes down and this is the only thing local and close to the same size as my current tank- that i can afford right now

Acrylic tanks can last ages!

The tank was originally delivered august 2022. They said there was tons of excuses to why it took so long. So that makes me a bit more confident that it is a G2 over G1

I would also recommend examining all eurobrace silicone seams using the aforementioned technique! — They may be the first point to show weakness on this particular tank design…

Bulkhead thru the bottom. But i was dumb when i plumbed it and do not have access to tightening it because how the plumbing and stand is constructed.

If I plumbed it like I originally planned it would have been fine and could access it but on each side of the plumbing thru the bottom I have 2x6 cross supports. I “simplified” my plumbing which killed access to the nuts.

I get the cost issue. I still have a Reefer 300 running so I'm not a hater but I am a realist.
TBH I would set up a large stock tank before I would buy a used RS tank and bring it into my home. If it last that's great. If it doesn't your out the cost of the tank and perhaps even the loss of livestock as well as water damage. I have seen large non redsea glass tanks with no issues leak after being moved. Its just not worth the risk to me but I wish you well on whatever you choose.

looking at your stand; I think you can get things apart to replace the bulkhead still! — 3.5” of width to get in there!

It may require a few special tools, but is possible!

— Does anyone recall which member around here made the 3D printed bulkhead nut tightening sockets? A extra long version of that would definitely get in there to undo the BH nut, even with some residual cut plumbing sticking off the bulkhead!

I can design, print/manufacture a socket for this, actually already started to and will complete this soon.

I am a Machinist by trade, aerospace 5axis fun stuff is my daily jam.

My wife likes the idea of the REDSEA from a visual perspective. It is a heck of a lot nicer then my setup currently looks .The tank is in our Parlor which doubles as her office. I do not see time to finish the stand off like I originally wanted for a while. So this would give her a better fuzzy feeling about the cosmetics of my tank having to be in here.
