Hello

Got a Kole Tang and a Midas Blenny in QT. They have been there for a week under observation, no meds. Last night they started to flash and twitch, so we knew that there was something. And now, this morning, the tang has gone from looking good yesterday to loosing a lot of color, looking white and sprinkled like this:

My partner thought she did see something similar on day 3, but it was gone when we got home after work that day.

We fear it's velvet, but would they have survived this long if it is? Only showing symptoms now?

Any help appreciated!

It does look like velvet - you'll want to start ramping up copper or dose Chloroquine Phosphate (CP - only available by prescription) right quickly. A freshwater dip and acriflavin or formalin bath may help bring some relief.

Complete write-up on the parasite by Humblefish is here: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/velvet-amyloodinium-ocellatum.217570/#post-2499399

You've not much time to waste - velvet's onset can be delayed, especially if you bought the fish from someplace which keeps them in sub-therapeutic levels of copper, but once it gets cranked up, it moves quickly. Ramp copper up to therapeutic levels within 24 - 48 hours.

Looks like velvet IMO as well.... if you can get your hands on CP for QT it would help better than copper.

Thanks for the reply! We live in Sweden, so it's not that easy to get hold of CP. And we did not have copper on hand either. So we did a freshwater dip, one for each fish and then put them in a temporary box for TTM (if this was ich). Tomorrow (It's night now) we will see how it looks, if we still think it's velvet we will see if we can get some medication/copper. The thing is it that the Tang looked a lot better in the middle of today, before we did the freshwater dip. Is that typical for Velvet? That it seems bad and then better like that?

Velvet has a much shorter life cycle which is why it worsened so quickly and why it seemed to vanish so quickly. TTM will not work, I am about 99% sure you’re dealing with velvet, unfortunately.

Hello again

So.. the tang did not survive the first days after we spotted the velvet. :(We were prepared for ich and flukes. But not this.
However, since we did not have copper or CP at hand, we started doing TTM, with freshwater dips between every move. The Midas Blenny went trough this and was eating well after every move. So now it's almost 12 days. And i have copper on hand, but the Midas Blenny is looking really good. So two questions:

1. Have the TTM only "stalled" the velvet? Because i have read that TTM does not work on Velvet, but without any explanation why it should not work.
2. Should i put in the copper medication after the final move? It's not the good thing you have in the states, it's Odimor a 7 day treatment. https://www.aquarium-munster.com/en/downloads/using-instructions.html

Thanks for the help so far.

Yes, TTM partially outruns velvet but not 100%. There will always be some trophonts (probably in the gills) every time the fish gets transferred. Once the transfers stop, velvet then has a static environment to build up it's population and overwhelm any fish in the tank. Unless the fish has somehow built up natural immunity by then.

Yes. Can you get this medication from Germany?

Yes, we can. Have ordered it, but should we keep up the TTM until the copper arrives? Or is it really bad if the fish gets immune?

Being TTM is your only defense right now, I would keep it going until Cupramine arrives.
