Good afternoon,

I am curious what people are after. Are they looking for more colors? Rarity?
What is your end goal? - A tank filled with a kaleidoscope of colorful coral? Fragging enough to pay for your habit?
Don't misunderstand; I don't begrudge anyone the right to buy whatever they want - I just wanna get in your heads. :nerd: What is it about a LE coral that makes you have to have it?

I was reading the recent "Trying to get LFS to carry high end chalices" thread and I came away frustrated. People saying there wasn't anything worth buying or that people just weren't educated on "what's what." Can someone help me here? What aren't people educated about?

Another recent thread asked opinions on an aussie chalice. One response was that they are "...HAWT chalices but lately have become VERY common"
I couldn't help focusing on the BUT in that statement. It is hard to avoid the conclusion that this chalice isn't rare enough to be "cool." Am I way off base here?

A couple people visited my tanks last weekend and were asking where all the "ultra" corals were at. Apparently my years of experience and success growing coral weren't as impressive as the single eye watermelon frag one proudly showed me a phone camera pic of. I shrugged - to each their own.

nayrgaijin can attest - my hobby is growing coral, not naming it or worrying about how rare it is - once again, to each their own.

any thoughts are welcome. Have a nice evening!

cheers--

Do a search, there's another thread on this.

You're opening a can of worms and the result is always ugly....

Moved thread to General Reef Discussion.

Yes Michael, your tank is so awesome and you do a great job raising coral.
You know exactly what this hobby is about and keep it real, whoever asked you where the LE stuff was needs to calm down haha.

I know you are truly interested as to what people will answer you with, but it usually does go downhill. On that note, please keep the thread clean and let's be careful not to crush any toes with the statements to be said everyone.

Personally I have some fetish with Chalices and can't stop buying them. Most of them happen to have an LE tag. I also find collecting these fun, as weird as it sounds. I enjoy seeing new eyes popping up and the rim growth on each one. Even in my frag tank these pieces are truly beautiful to me and when they grow out I hope to have an awesome garden of them.

For myself, I can say that "LE" matters very little, however I do like to buy pieces that are rare and have the most colors to put in my tank and that is usualy going to come at a higher price tag. If I am going to spend the time buying and raising my corals into nice colonies I want the end result to be something I am happy with and not think to myself 2 years down the road "That piece does nothing for me" In my opinion you cant compare a Tyree Red Watermelon chalice to a dark green chalice that may have a swath of red in it. So I am willing to pay the premium knowing I like what I am getting and also that I will be able to get back some of my investment down the road since theres always going to be more demand for nicer looking corals.

thanks nicks.
Ryan, I couldn't get back in so I started another handle. LOL. You can delete this one.

In retrospect I would have entitled the thread "What draws you to LE?"
For some, the answer is nothing. For others, well, I'm just curious about motivation. *shrug* Maybe I'll start growing stuff that makes people
LOL

cheers--

I would also like to point out Michael that I think I was the one who told that guy his chalice was nice but was very common and I meant nothing even close to "its not rare enough to be cool". What he was asking was why he paid so little for his "hot chalice" while other LE chalices cost much more. The truth was that being that it is a "common" chalice, its only logical its going to cost less. Its supply and demand. If there are chalices like that for sale all over the place they will cost less. Not because its not cool. Because the stores selling them cant get people to spend more money on them. Thats the only reason. Like I said in his thread, you cant just label a chalice LE and sell it for 300 an eye. It has to earn LE status. You can try but it just won't sell unless it really is that nice looking.

I see it to be rather simple. Some people like LE coral because its a status. Some like them because they are typically more expensive and believe that quality cost money. Some like them because generally they are the nicer colored coral. And some like them because they are considered the collectable coral. On the other hand other people hate LE coral for ever reason listed above.

I don't think that there is a way to explain why so many like and so many people hate LE coral. It all comes down to personal preference. Like yourself, you have little interest in seeing a one or two eye frag while the other person gets really excited about having it.

Michael I am with you on this I have a very nice 300 gal tank with a lot of very nice corals. I have had people goo goo eye over my corals and none of them have the (LE) tag on them. I will never spend 300.00 dollars for an eye of anything. Now I am not saying don't do it and I am not calling anyone who does any names I am just saying as you have said, why? For me it is not the money cause I can buy whatever I want, well maybe not whatever I still don't own my island yet:tongue: But I too am puzzled by the craze of it costs this much so I have to have it. But as long as there are people who will pay these prices the powers in charge will continue to charge them.

Some people have to have the best stuff, no matter what.... all hobbies are like that.

Take cars for example... you have die hard heads from all aspects... trucks, imports, hot rods, lowriders etc etc..... but there will always be that Lambo tuner who pulls up and wows everyone. Some of us are sick of seeing Hondas and Camaros... so we spend the extra money for a little piece of Ferrari.....

Oh, also supply and demand.

I should just shut up, I get too deep into these discussions sometimes and people start sending me death threats and what not.

*high fives himself*

Think of it as a Chanel purse.

*I* like this analogy...My wife insists they're not the same.

LOL. We may have discovered the reason for the lack of funds in my reef budget.

edit: Joe, I want to be careful to distance myself from too many "WHY?" comments. I haven't had a lot of luck finding previous threads on this subject, but my gut feeling is that people took my question as similar to a previous "Why do you idiots spend so much money on LE coral?"-type question...something that is more of an attack on what people obviously love. I don't do that.

I get that people could think that and I would have worded it differently now that I've thought about it.

cheers--

Well said Kraylen. What I don't understand is why anyone cares what someone else wants to buy? Why do some people buy softies? Why do some people buy only sps? Why do some people buy acans? Why do some people need to know why? Its a matter of taste and preference. Why ask Why???????
