Patience! My protein skimmer did not start producing anything for the first several months. I programmed my AI lights according to the scenarios of other members and what was recommended with research as I had the same problem as you. I then lowered my light settings (intensity) and the length of time that they were lit which helped a lot. Having tangs and scrapping the glass every 3 days is the best that I can adjust.

What are you using for water, let's start with that... I'm guessing your new to the hobby? How are you testing parameters? How new is the tank?
i use ro plus prime...... i use all my testing stuff box tests everyone uses.. and salinity meter. parameters are perfect

Sooooo... How new is the tank?

I'm leaning towards the new tank uglies, which is the usual. Take 2 Advil and keep going for 3-6 months.

Did you start with dry rock?
Tank is few months old after the first 1 crashed from being out of town during family emergency. Started with live rock and sand.

To start, can you post your exact parameters? Just saying they are great or perfect or using what everyone else is using doesn't really allow us to provide any direction to go. They very well could be perfect, I am not trying to say you are wrong, but it just helps us help you a little more. I would post parameters and the testing kit you are using for each param. Without that, it would be impossible for anyone to really help besides some generic advice.

Second, be patient with it, very few good changes happen overnight in reef tanks. Nothing good happens fast. I would assume it is ugly stages ( generic advice assuming all parameters are perfect) like Lbrdsoxfan said, they can last for months after cycling, so don't fret that, worst case, it could depend on what you mean by algae however, most are part of the process.

A protein skimmer takes a couple weeks to get going, keep it running constantly as this is its break in period, I believe it has to build a film inside along the walls to work properly. Mine took about 3 weeks to actually skim well.

Corals closing with light on - is this new? Since the tank crashed or have they always done this?

Hey Man, everything looks good other than the phos and nitrates. First thing i’d look at is getting those up to a good level. I’m no professional, but when those bottom out i believe it can leave a space for negative bacteria to thrive.

When my tank crashed, My phos was 0-.01 and nitrates were 0-1, and then i battled dino’s for weeks because of it. I turned off my skimmer for a couple days, and over fed my fish a bit to build phos and nitrates back up slowly, didn’t do water changes for a little while to let it get dirty, but had to also constantly test everything to make sure the nitrifying bacteria was doing it’s job, dosed brightwell bacteria until I got healthier readings, and once I got those a little up, I started running the skimmer for 8-10 hours a day, to keep my phos at .03 and nitrates under 10. You can also does brightwell phos and nitrogen, I have heard those work well.

Also just want to say - I am not saying this will for sure fix it, but that’s where you’ll have to start, I wouldn’t chase exact parameters, but phos and nitrate have to be higher than 0 and get them up to where your tank starts responding well.

IMO turn off skimmer till nitrate is over 20. Could take days weeks could be a while. Personally I think skimmers may be more troublesome than they are worth. I haven’t ran mine in almost 3 months. And my tank size is about the same as yours.
