The tang is breathing fast, and it does cough once. That can be a sign of gill flukes. However, suddenly not eating is NOT a sign of gill flukes, so I'm not really confident in that diagnosis.

I do think that at 3 months in your tank, that you are past the "death zone" that we see in blonde naso tangs - that issue usually shows up within 40 days of being in a tank.

Thanks all for the suggestions! The freshwater dip did the trick-he’s started eating again and his breathing has slowed down considerably.

Keep a close eye on him, and the others in the tank. It could have been flukes. But hard to say as others have stated. They don’t stop eating out of nowhere because of flukes.

Just be aware that if it was gill flukes, a FW dip will just knock their numbers back, it will not cure the fish. You’ll need to follow up with a praziquantel treatment:

Need help again, the previous issue with the naso, after a freshwater dip, went away and he started eating. Yay, for a couple weeks. Now all 8 of the fish have black and white dots. They are still eating, but most are not a fan of the focus and metro I’ve added to their food. Maybe too much in the food? I did a 1:1 ratio with 2 cubes of formula 1. I really can’t put them in a hospital tank with copper can I? Thanks in advance for your advice!!

Skip the focus + metro, it won’t work unless you dose it accurately. The proper dose is 1 to 2 % metro by weight in the food. It is very bitter and if you go higher, the fish won’t eat it, and may start refusing untreated food also.

In any event, metro won’t treat this - these are tang turbellarians, called “black ich”. Praziquantel is the most common treatment, but it rarely works. Formalin dips works, but it is toxic to people, you should not use it in a home.

Hyposalinity with no invertebrates present is your best option….30 days at 1.009

Also an air stone to aerate the water 30min prior to dipping the fish. Then about 30-40 min tops with fish in the dip. Some people will do 45min. Keep an eye out on the fish to see how they are swimming.

Yes! There is some info on the internet that says to use 1 ml per gallon, but that is dead wrong! That dose is only used for cold water fish. The 0.6 ml dose you mentioned is the proper dose for tropical fish; 167 ppm

Yea 1 ml will most likely kill your fish Jay. Stuff is crazy chemical for sure. When I dipped all my fish it was crazy how well it worked. So the need for anything above .6ml per gal is crazy.

To OP, formalin needs to be precisely measured so does the amount of water you putting in the bucket. Oh and no lights. Helps the fish keep calm for the moment.

Hypo is the easier option as @jay stated. If the disease is not way out of hand and the fish are all eating well that is.

Good point, that would be. I imagine I will need to remove the leathers? No corals, just leathers and fish.

You would need to remove ALL invertebrates, they just don't handle hypo well.
