Good morning.

During my system tear down and reset, I found what I believe is a yellow sponge. It was found in a dark, low flow cave area in my rockscape. I thought it was cool so now have it at the top of my rock pile for all the world to see. I've since read that maybe it's a bad thing....even toxic.

I did some searching on "yellow sponge" and I don't see a picture similar to mine so...

Does anyone recognize this specific sponge or have experience with it?
Are all sponges bad?
Is there a chance I got the lucky sponge that is cool?

I ask because I like the idea of it...and because my rock is old original ocean rock...so maybe I have something unique and not bad? Dare to dream.

Your insights are appreciated. Photo below. (Yes...I have those little starfish...but I kinda like those too...unless someone has insights there as well.)

It is yellow and undesired in reef tank mainly due to toxins
To rid of it, you can pull rock and expose it to air for a few minutes
Other option is to inject it with air, vinegar or boiling water which will destroy its cells
Last option, remove rock and trim it off with a hobby knife and clean off the rest with a toothbrush and flush with tank water and return to the tank

Well...I tried. Thanks for the insight.

I'm moving forward with additions to my system now that I have it reset. Should I be concerned about existing toxins? Will they just dissipate? Or is it vital that I use some carbon in a reactor to clean the water? Or other ideas?
