I am the aquarium club sponsor at our local high school. The school recently upgraded from a 300 gallon 8’ stand mounted Planet aquarium to 460 gallon 8’ inwall system. The past tank 13 years old was showing signs of age so we have moved on. One of the most impressive memories in the mind of the student body is the sharks. It is the mascot (Sabine Pass Sharks) and we had two at one point. A Brown Banded Bamboo and a Coral Cat Shark.

The students have asked for a shark but this is not a realistic option with this tank set up. SPS dominant and open water island and arches type aquascape and nutrient control. So my suggestion to them was a living coral covered ceramic shark in school colors. Purple and gold.

Has anyone seen quality ceramic figurines for sale and where? I would prefer realistic to cartoonish and around 10” long. The finished project would eventually be auctioned off to the reefing community in support of the schools biology scholarship fund.

Fantastic! I love this idea! Looks like some great options in the link above. Do you have pictures of the tank?

This is so awesome for these kids and reefing for the future! I would love it if you make a Build Thread and let us all follow in this journey along with the students!

Well the ceramic shark is on the way. I didn’t get the one I really liked because it was from Romania. With all the issues with de minimus and shipping and tariffs, I thought it was a better option to just stay in the good ole USA. I have the class researching and preparing a binder with pages giving details about all the inhabitants of the tank. The Aquatics class is researching different encrusting corals to attach to the shark. They will present their findings to me for approval.
What coral would you use?

There are some chalice corals that are encrusters that have a good gold, none with purple though. Purple encrusters you could do something like a psamacorra.

Bizzaro cyphastrea is more blue and yellow, but close.

Well here is our shark. 10” unpainted ceramic bisque. I am leaning toward Cyphastrea for the coral. Need a purple with yellow polyps or a solid yellow or gold and a solid purple

Are they actually yellow a lot of the photos look lime green. I saw a nice golden yellow pavona on Jason Fox but can’t find a purple to go with it. If I do two solids they need to be compatible. Like able to graft together once they meet

Top Shelf Aquatics has them and they look purple and yellow to me. Now, having said that, I was just in a discussion where what we see online and what we see when we actually put stuff in our tanks can be a very different experience. A lot of it has to do with the retailer’s photography and the lighting in our tanks.
