Sounds like you may have a mix of metric and imperial bulkheads and pipe. You might need some specific local help to make sure you get the bulkheads that fit the PVC pipe that you have in the UK.

Does the pipe you have indicate the size and standard? Metric or imperial? The sizes are close, but can be between 1 and 2 mm different leading to either pipe that won't fit in the bulkhead, or won't be snug.

Hole sizes in the glass can vary a few mm as long as there's plenty of glass for the gaskets to rest on.

This may help: https://www.aquariumplumbing.co.uk/metric-v-imperial.asp
