On a 21" 40gal cube, the kessil should be plenty of light, and it will have a nicer more homogeneous look aesthetically both in and out of the tank.

any one know why my two clowns only stay in the corner ? they never move out of the area there chilling in. they only come out during feedings ?

That's what clown fish do.

all right everyone lets discuss light intensity for a reef what are your par or lux reading at in your tanks ?
What should i use to measure light lux or par?

BRS rents par meters.
Or you could buy a Seneye reef monitor and use that. Not as high quality as a lab grade par meter but good enough for our needs, and way cheaper.

If you go with the seneye, just be aware that it's really sensitive to the angle it's positioned at, so you kind of have to rotate it to point the sensor towards the light source.

Stick with kessils, place sun coral in a shaded area or get a piece of shelf rock ( making it a canopy) and place sun coral underneath it.
Clowns may be intimidated but not unusual behavior for clowns. They at minimum should at least come out for food.

You need a controller to manage ramping.

UPDATE:

so during lunch today i went to the LFS picked up some API ammo-lock Ammonia detoxifier (they didnt have prime but i order some off the internet and will have it on sunday). I also picked up this ammonia reducing filter media. (figured it couldnt hurt anything) i put the media in with my carbon thats already in the tanks sump.

So right now i have the ammonia reducing media and API AMMO-LOCK detoxifier currently in my system. After work ill do another ammonia reading.

I did order the ammonia badge from seachem and will be installing it tommorrow when it arrives.

As for the new kessil light i am still awaiting its arrival today by 8:00pm

the UV Sterilizor has made a huge difference in just one day ! starting to clear up the water. now to get the ammonia undercontrol.

P.S. i hate using API chems never had good luck with using them on my freshwater tanks so i reduced the dose i gave the tank by half to see how the animals react to it ?
