Ball valves may work ok-ish but they are not designed to get the very small adjustments you really need. Even with a gate valve on a herbie style you will need to adjust occasionally to keep the emergency drain clear. Organic matter/bacteria will build up in the pipes and valve slowing the flow. This doesnt seem to happen as frequently in a beananimal set up using 3 drains the open drain takes up the "extra" flow without having to adjust the gate valve on the siphon drain. I completely open the gate valve once every 2 months during maintenance to help clear it out. If I dont I notice the emergency drain starts to get a trickle in it.
Honestly I’m kinda regretting not just getting the larger overflow box to go with the bean animal style. But I will definitely keep that in mind and set up a schedule when I start to notice a pattern in reduced efficiency of the overflow. But overall do you think that the new design would work in theory at least or are there any adjustments I should make ?
No looks like it will work to me. I have had these setups for years and in different configurations. I was told having the gate valve closer to the overflow box is optimal but I didnt notice a difference running it just below the overflow or in my basement 16' below the tank. I think for amount of water in the pipes its better to have the valve closer to the tank but, it still worked both ways for me.
