Welcome Virginia.
I used to live in Montgomery and we'd go up to Lake Jordon (Jerden is how we pronounced it). We'd go though Slapout on the way. I heard somebody say it got it's name because it was slap out of town and nearly out of the state.
According to the Holtville/Slapout FD site, the name originated back in the 50’s and early 60’s with a general store in town that had all sorts of things you might need in rural Alabama. As people would come in and try to buy things, if the owner didn’t have what they were looking for he would say "I am slapout of it" and it kinda stuck.
I'm sure you'll enjoy the time you spend on R2R!
