Hi yall! Not new here but don’t often post, just kinda stalk… and I totally understand there’s plenty of posts similar to this one so I apologize!

I added a firefish this weekend to my tank along with a cleaner shrimp and I haven’t seen the poor dude since the first night. I drip acclimated with the lights off and separate and then put the shrimp in first with no problem. He’s been out and about ever since and doing great. Within 5 seconds of me adding in the firefish, he took a quick lap around the tank and jetted out on the dresser the tank is on, all before I could get the lid back on. I quickly scooped him up and got him back in the tank and he seemed fine the rest of the night. Interacted well with my clowns, breathing perfectly fine, no visible injuries, and even ate a bit of mysis. Once the lights went out he settled in a small cave and I haven’t seen him since.

Some other tank info that’s worth adding, the other only tank mates are a pair of clowns around a year old I transferred from my old Fluval Evo that are completly peaceful and just a couple years old(pretty small ≈1.5in), a peppermint shrimp, and the cleaner shrimp. I shut down my evo and upgraded to the IM lagoon 25 a couple months ago, it’s jam packed with corals and macros, and has ≈30 lbs of live rock an sand (some rocks I brought over from the evo). Corals, macros, and my anemones are thriving, honestly growing quicker than I planned for….

He has plenty of hiding space, plenty of copepods to feed on, no aggressive tank mates, and I have the tight fitted lid for the tank with the mesh top to prevent jumping.
I’ve also consistently been checking my overflow, carpet, and all surrounding areas to double check he hasn’t jumped.

My tank water has been very stable but also very clean, testing actually 0 nitrates so i’ve been trying to overfeed a little. (a mix of garlic covered pellets, mysis and brine shrimp) and I will make sure to shoot some right by his cave. I think that’s about everything I can think of, if yall have any other questions just ask.

If he doesn’t come out tonight that will be day 5 of not seeing him at all, 6 after acclimation. I totally get they are shy and skittish and people don’t see them for weeks at a time sometime, but I’m starting to overthink maybe he got hurt when he jumped and maybe settled and died in the rock? I figured some of the food would entice him and he would come out by now. Any other word to help this guy would be greatly appreciated, it kills me thinking he’s too scared and uncomfortable to come out, I think they are beautiful fish and I was planning on him being my centerpiece fish.

Also I wanted to add, I don’t post much but I’m very active on a ton of other reef forums ,communities from my lfs, talk to other reef keepers, and I wanted to thank you guys so much. Yall are always so welcoming and kind and offer so much help. I got in the hobby at the age of 9, and lord knows I’ve made so many mistakes over the years, but this place always seems to help!!

If you turn off all pumps and wave makers and feed will he come out to eat? My purple firefish stays tightly tucked away in my rocks, I turn off return pumps, put the powerheads in feed mode and feed the tank she comes out every time. Ive noticed they don't like alot of flow, try that.

I bought a pair, both of which hid from day one. One of them emerged, emaciated, some weeks later - and became one of the most active of my fish (before leaping through the mesh of my tank cover and expiring on the carpet). I never saw the other one.

My tank is lightly stocked and peaceful, I've no idea what they were hiding from.

That’s so sad I’m sorry. I feel like they are widely described as an easy nano fish too.

I guess we never really know what goes through our fishes heads

My son named this guy "Flash" because of how quickly he would disappear under the rocks at the hint of any movement of any sort. Two months later he basically just chills in plain view all day long, doesn't care who is swimming by him in the tank or who is walking by in my office.

Update on the tank:

Ive fed three times now since my last post, all with everything off (even lights off once) with all 3 different types of food, and still no sight on the guy. However, no ammonia spike at all and everything still else still seems happy. CUC only focused on algae, happy clowns, happy nems, happy corals.

Maybe I’m looking a little too hard into this, but when doing my weekly water change and maintenance today I noticed the sand near the cave where I last saw the firefish looked a little cleaner than the rest of the sand. Ik they aren’t mainly a sifting goby, but possibly a good sign right?

Mine did do some burrowing the first week or two...and he still sleeps in a little cave under a rock every night, so it's very possible he's in that hole. I hope so! I saw a couple posts either here on reddit this week where people hadn't seen their firefish for so long that they bought another one...then the first one came out and they had a pair. 😂

I’ve actually been thinking about this, the only problem is I am a little scared of aggression between the two since my tank is only 25 gallons. Would that be a problem? I wouldn’t want to add any other fish if that would work though

I’ve never had two personally, but everything I’ve read suggests that they tend to be peaceful. You’d just want to make sure there’s enough so each could have a hiding spot to sleep in.

Hey, I actually got my firefish around 2 days ago. It’s small and was supershy at first. However after the first day, it started to swim against the water column and is always out along as the lights are ramped up.

My AI Prime starts to ramp around noon and ends at 12AM. He’s always out and picking at floating particles. He’s also currently eating mysis shrimp and brine. Just make sure to turn pumps and power head off when feeding since they’re timid creatures.

Also please make sure to have a lid!

My IM lagoon 25 had a 1/4” opening and I’m certain the small firefish can jump through it. I cut out some spare mesh and blocked off the holes, and on top of that, I have a cutout of an acrylic panel on top because I’m pretty paranoid from them jumping.

I’ve already purchased new mesh openings from BRS (1/8”) and will swap it out when the package arrives. Just make sure the tank mates it’s living with isn’t to aggressive, or else they’ll hide all the time.

Yeah, I had a yasha goby jump right through a 3/8" mesh. I got the 1/8" mesh from BRS like you are doing. It did drop my PAR a bit, but keeps those little fish safe inside.

Thanks for the feedback!! I did replace the 1/4 mesh with the 1/8 prior to adding anything to the tank, and also have an acrylic panel on top. I lost my first fish (diamond goby) to the carpet and will never make that mistake again… Also I double checked my overflow, filter socks, behind the tank, and all the carpet surrounding the tank this morning with no fish

Oh they have plenty of hiding spots… If i make it through this snowstorm this weekend I ma go check if the lfs has any left!
