So my tank plan is to have an sps dominant tank with extremely high flow. 120gallon currently 2 mp 40 and 2 mp10 and I will probably be adding another mp40 and a couple tunze power heads as well. I wanted to know other than encrusting cyphastrea, leptastrea etc. are there any LPS that could handle intense flow? I would place them near the bottom of the tank under 150 par and try to shelter them a little but my goal is to have a very turbulent tank. Any Experiences would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Very interested in the replies. I’ve only put one MP40 in my 90g so that I could keep both SPS and LPS. Do run the MP40 at 75% capacity.

I do love my torches and don’t want to over flow them.

My main goal is all sps with possible some Lps in underlit areas with slightly lower flow. I did consider torches but I guess I’d have to see how much flow I end up with in the lower flow areas. How strong of flow would you say yours are getting? Right now I run all the mp’s at about 75% on reefcrest mode. I’m only starting out but small frags are happy and a couple larger pieces I added to the tank are growing very fast and showing nice coloration.

All of my NPS actually do great in high flow, as does my NPS gorgonian. I have a orange sun coral, black sun coral, dendro, fat head dendro, and a purple gorgonian. As long as they are able to fully extend without being blown off their rock, I would imagine they would do fine in your tank as long as you don’t mind turning off your pumps to feed them.

You corals look fabulous!

Also run Reefcrest mode at 75% but torches are low and only get the indirect flow.

One trick with the torches is place them slightly down flow from where you normally feed your fish. This way they are always getting tidbits of food. This seems to kept them happy even when Reefcrest reaches top speed flows.

IME sun corals (NPS) like super low flow unless you have them on the "back side" of a rock and flow is hitting the front side. That's where they grow in the wild IIRC.

That’s not been my experience, but not all of the same coral are the same. My sun corals (both orange and black) do great in high flow as do my dendros, but maybe they’re just oddballs ;)
