I like running Purigen for chemical filtration, but that's JMO.

If you need to remove a treatment, then GAC is better in doing that, then Purigen is.

Sump will keep everything more stable and sometimes will let you go without WC

I ran a 20 long a few years back with an aquaclear HOB that I converted to a fuge, worked great! I placed it on the skinny end of the tank and framed it inside stand/canopy so you couldn’t see it, setup was peninsula style. Small clip-on led light over the aquaclear and halide over the tank, kept/grew montis, milleporas, some acros, and zoas very successfully.

Just these 2 old photos that I could find, this was early-mid 2000’s. Think I was still rocking a flip phone at the time with a horrific built-in camera, lol. 1st photo is right after it was setup, 2nd photo was a year or so later right before I sold it. Sorry for the bad colors, those early camera phones didn’t do well with blue aquarium light.

I think a 70 if I remember correctly, it fit perfectly on the end which was 12”, whichever model is around 12” wide. Took everything out, live rock rubble in bottom with chaeto on top, pruned every 2 weeks or so.

If you have the space go with the sump underneath you’d be better going that route. All the equipment Will be in the sump leaving you with a much cleaner looking set up. I have a 36 bow and I have a Refugium, skimmer hanging off the back. Plus the heater in the tank. I hate it.
