Looking to start a 40 gallon FOWLR TANK.

My question is I don't want to do a sumo to start off. So I have been looking in to the following HOB Protein Skimmer.

Reef Octopus classic 100 HOB Protein Skimmer

Just want to see what people though about it? Also with this do I still need to have another filtration device such as a HOB Power Filter? Such as a aqua clear 70 HOB power filter.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

i would go with the Reef Octopus BH-90.
Better design. Very effective and quiet.

The slickest solution I know for sumpless...

Comline® Reefpack 250 ($213)

or
Reefpack 500 ($608)

  • The 250 should work fine, and is overall better for that size of tank. It will house (and hide) the sensor for the ATO as well as the heater.
  • The 500 doesn't have room for a heater, but includes the Osmolator ATO system as well as hiding the ATO's sensors.
  • Both come with a protein skimmer.
  • The who shebang mounts via magnets.

If any of them made sense in your context (probably only if you switched to corals), the Comline system is also designed with a matching set of other components:

A CO2 reactor, the Comline® Calcium Automat ($252)...

Another media reactor, Comline® Streamfilter 3163 ($87), which is a slightly different module from what comes with the Reefpack...note the wide outlet...

The Comline® Wavebox 6208 ($291)....
