Struggling with my current set up (40 breeder with HOB filter and skimmer).

I feel like I won’t be able to get a nice looking tank with all HOB equipment.

Let’s see some of your HOB tanks and how they are looking!

Mass Aquarium has/had a great 40 gallon breeder with a HOB filter. There’s also inappropriate reefer with the budget 10g that has a modified HOB filter. There are quite a few out there.

If you’re truly concerned about it there are fairly simple ways to shift your tank around without drilling.

Wish you luck man! You can do it! You don’t need a full system. Lol 1 year 1/2 old 10 gallon mixed reef.

Hey Rakkasan!

I am using a Aquaclear HOB filter with chemipure blue nano bag and changing the bags once a month. I also do 50% water change weekly. No skimmer or dosing. I feed once a day. Thank you :D

I've seen that a lot of folks have success utilizing the inTank mods for the Aquaclear HOBs... I think the 110 with the inTank drop in can even fit a heater and TunZe skimmer. There are also some pretty nice "sumpless" ATOs from XP Aqua out there and ocean box designs makes some surface skimmers for the intake.

These pictures are from about 2-3months ago when I started this 100 gallon. I runs with a large canister filter, an internal filter and primer and a surface skimmer. There is so much biological filtering from tiny ceramic rings I have in each of the filters with phosguard that my nitrates are consistently at or below .10. It’s slightly unappealing but I keep the light off everything in the back of the tank so it it doesn’t bother me to much. The reason I don’t have a sump is because my tank already came with the canister filter when I bought it. The canister filter is doing a good job so I don’t know that I want to switch to a sump, as I don’t really see how it’s worth it.

Ps. I have much more corals and fish now than when I took this picture and the nitrates are still at the same level.

And growing 3 different Birdnest sps as well.
